If they use this show to preach about Brexit in a heavy handed way it will fail.

Damn, that is legitimately heartwarming. The Picard / Guinan relationship was always so intriguing, because the show kept it so mysterious.

So watched the first episode. There were some action parts of it, but for the most part it's character story and a bit of a mystery (not a huge one as you can guess early, but there is an added thing at the end). Some spoilery notes from here on. {Spoiler}Data looking different I'll chalk up to Picard's dreamscape making it so. Also, B4's fate in the end pretty much wipes out 90% of the post-Nemesis Trek stuff that had Data come back in one way or another (including the Countdown comics that led to Trek 09.
I like how we got to see more of this future Earth. While Picard's Vineyard, save for a replicator and such, remains at most our time...seeing Paris, Chicago and San Francisco of the future is good (haven't watched Discovery so don't know if it was done there too, but even then this is over a century later timeline wise). Also, FINALLY seeing the Daystrom Institute...at least part of it anyway.
They did delve a bit into the lore of things by having a Commander Bruce Maddox reference, and I appreciate that. Wonder if he shows up again.
Surprised that they killed off the girl from the trailer, Dahj. Unless because of what she is she somehow survived. But the ending twist works for it.
Despite his voice not being as young as it was, good to see Stewart have the conviction in tone when he gave the speech at the end of his interview with the reporter.
I'm guessing the next episode will be the one where he meets with Riker and Troi...and possibly Seven of Nine as well.

Without spoilers, can you comment on whether or not this is "casual fan" friendly or if you have to be a hardcore Trekkie to understand it. For example, I have seen most (but not every) episode of the original series and TNG, but never got into the other shows, and I think I've seen all the movies but I might have missed one or two. And I've never read any of the books or comics, Would this be a good series for me to check out, or is it for the die-hards only?

At the moment, I think being that you've seen most of TNG, all you need from here is to know what happened to one character in Star Trek: Nemesis and then the incident that lead to the reboot timeline shown in Trek 09. Books and comics never really come into play into Trek TV, existing in a "in continuity until something in the TV show contradicts it, where that makes the show the canon" bubble. I will say watching almost all of TNG will help you get some references better, like one name drop that I mentioned in spoilers, but it still works on its own.

I just hope this is better than Discovery. I haven't really checked the general consensus on Discovery, but I was so disappointed by that show. I stuck with it for one season and I felt like that was enough.

I stuck with it for one season and I felt like that was enough. Second season is so much better then the first, and definitely brought in a much more Star Trek feel. I’d highly recommend giving it a chance. Plus, you have the absolutely fantastic Anson Mount as Capt. Pike, and a very good performance by Ethan Peck as Spock. Definitely worth your time

Yeah, that was a winner for me. {Spoiler}It really felt like I was watching a follow-up to the Next Generation, it moved the original continuity forward, the production looked slick, and the cost of Picard's adventures off and later on are conveyed flawlessly by how spent and then ignited Patrick becomes in the scenes that command him to be. I actually did think briefly the romulan at the end might have been related to Nero from Trek '09, but that's probably a headcanon too far that'll be contradicted later

Cool, gonna watch it as soon as I get home. I've seen Nemesis, so I assume I know what you are referring to. I saw the first two of the 09 reboot movies but never saw the third. If they explained WHY time was rebooted I don't remember, but I do remember that it was.

That being said, damn good start to the series. I so badly wish CBS did Netflix style binge drops because I want more of this immediately.

I just kinda never got around to it. It's not that I've been intentionally avoiding seeing it or anything. Anyway, watched Picard and dug it. It's casual friendly enough that I can follow it, and it seems like it's gonna be a fun ride. Also, I love Alison Pill, wasn't aware she was going to be in it.

As new Star Trek action schlock goes it was fine. I feel like the world could really use some of that good old Star Trek optimistic futurism, but it just seems like that is never coming back.
Here's the Red Letter Media guys on it

I finally watched the show and thought it was good. It felt like an interesting and fresh continuation of Next Generation.

For the most part their review merely points out the lack of logic underpinning the central elements of the episode, along with the writers seeming ignorance of the wider franchise, the inevitable problems with using Abrams' dumb 2009 concepts as a basis for a story, and intentionally ludicrous suggestions which they think, not entirely without merit, that those suggested will actually be surpassed by even worse ideas from the real creative team.
