Buffy's Once More with Feeling is the only time I was 100% okay with a musical episode of a nonmusical show. Actually in general the Buffyverse did some really good 'gimmick' episodes. Hush is fantastic as well. Speaking of Xena/Hercules the reverse verse on that show was pretty amazing. Where Ares was the God of Love and Hercules was evil? I loved whenever they went there. Walk Through The Fire regularly makes it into my playlists. I'm free if that bitch dies! ... I better help her out.

The G.I Joe episode of Community was a fantastic love letter to both shows.
Also, the Cops episodes of both X-Files and My Name Is Earl were great.

Would you consider "Blink" to be a 'special episode' of Doctor Who because it tells a time travel story from the perspective of a person who isn't travelling with the time traveller?
I think it's great, even though I think the Weeping Angels are really kind if silly...
Also, the interview episodes of MASH Are really just clip-shows but I love them.

Can we count musicals on cartoons too? Cause Mayhem of the Music Meister! is still my gold standard.
On the other hand, the musical episode near the end of Raising Hope was awful.

The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase. The PI Wiggum segment might be my favourite ten minutes of TV ever.

DS9's retro episode where they blend the DS9 actors with the Tribble episode from classic Trek. Whole thing was done perfectly, DS9 had a ton of great gimmick episodes. Far Beyond The Stars is incredible television, as is In The Pale Moonlight. And the baseball episode and The Heist in Vic Fontaine's casino were a breath of fresh air in a very heavy, emotional season.

Not really episodes but I liked when Psych would alter their theme song depending on the tone of the episode. I love that Boyz I men cover
Though, that one episode where they completely re did an episode from season 1 was interesting but I don’t know if I actually liked that they changed the murderer and the motive

Pinky And The Brain had a good one where we got to see the episode through Pinky's eyes.
I loved Pinky and the Brain and Larry! to help prove the point to the network that the idea of adding a third character just didn't work... of course the network didn't listen and we ended up with Pinky Elmyra and the Brain... but still... I liked how in that episode, Larry was played by Billy West, using his Stimpy voice. Speaking of old school WB animation, I loved the Tiny Toons episode spoofing SNL, as well as K-Acme TV.
