Seems that a lot of "special" episodes are often met with a lot of disdan. Which I understand, especially if it's some random "musical" episode. Or if there's an indian character, they have to have a "bollywood" scene.
But There are some shows where I enjoyed the occasional break from the usual.
Drew Carey show in Particular, I liked.
Live show Improve episode pop up video episode spot the mistakes
Other shows I liked when they
alternate Ending (usually based on Fan voting) What if Episode Heel-Face Role reversal (in particular, I liked When Xena her nemesis Calisto switched body so the actress playing Calisto took over the show for a couple episodes. I liked her).
I usually hate "it was all a dream" but I loved it on Married with Children just because
a. The stupid pregnancy storyline was halted and never mentioned again b. they had a pirate episode that so obviously not the regular cannon, it provided a reason why the show was set in such a weird setting.
Episodes from the perspective of another character besides the main one. Scrubs Simpsons
episodes where the storyline can be played twice from different perspectives (leverage).

I liked the way Clerks: The Animated Series and Community did "The Clips Episode" showing clips of events we've never actually seen before on either show.

I liked the way Clerks: The Animated Series did "The Clips Episode". I liked how it started with just showing clips of the episode before it... since it was the second episode.

Buffy's Once More with Feeling is the only time I was 100% okay with a musical episode of a nonmusical show.
Actually in general the Buffyverse did some really good 'gimmick' episodes.
Hush is fantastic as well.
Speaking of Xena/Hercules the reverse verse on that show was pretty amazing. Where Ares was the God of Love and Hercules was evil? I loved whenever they went there.

I liked the All Grown Up episode of Rugrats but it should have just been a one off and not an entire series.
Christmas and Halloween specials always brings out the best in cartoons.

Ooh thought of another one that they did on Supernatural and Xena both. When they go to the AU where it's the 'real' world and their just a TV show.

I remember they had a Hercules one where it turned out that Kevin Sorbo was actually Hercules. It was really late in Xena's run but I remember it clearly. Thinking on it more maybe it was just set in modern times and they were the descendants of themselves. Imma go look it up.

Once More with Feeling was great.
Fun, catchy songs and a pretty important episode to the season as a whole. I remember there been alot of character development and it set up and foreshadowed alot of future events.
Excellent episode.
I also remember Fresh Prince tended to be really good with the special, serious episodes. Like the one where Will's father returns and leaves again.

The Drew Carey Show episodes with the errors (usually on April Fool's Day) and the live improv episode are the ones that stand out to me.

Like it was a gimmick but done right. So much shit they were hiding from each other came out in that episode. I mean just the Sccobies finding out that they ripped Buffy out of Heaven alone was nuts. Which lead to Willow doing the 'Forget' spell. Oh man I love that episode so much.

Supernatural's "Baby" is one of my absolute favorite episodes of the entire show, and it's all from the vantage point of the impala.

The Office's 'Threat Level Midnight' was such a fun last big hurrah and look back for Michael. One of my favorite episodes.
The episode of the animated "The Tick" series called "Heroes" - a parody of 'Cops' where a documentary crew followed The Tick and Arthur in pursuit of a villain on a single night.

I always enjoyed the bottle episodes of Seinfeld. The Chinese Restaurant and Parking Garage episodes especially were ones I could relate to.

M*A*S*H had a "real time" episode that was cool. A patient was flown in and was bleeding so badly that the doctors had to clamp a major artery. They said they had twenty minutes to fix the damage or the guy would suffer permanent damage. A clock appeared in the corner of the screen and counted down as they raced to save their patient.

I liked Breaking Bad's The Fly. It was an interesting character study sort of an episode.
CSI's Grave Danger episodes hooked me too.

Community was always good with gimmick episodes (except some in the gas leak year),
Bottle episodes like Annie's pen going missing, the flashback episode, the paintball episodes, G.I. Joe cartoon and many more
