The Smoking Skull worked for Austin because it fit his anti-establishment character. Not only was Austin holding the top title in Vince's company, but he wasn't even wearing the championship belt that Vince had picked to represent the top title.

I hate the eagle for the World . It screams too much USA for something supposed to represent the world.
Better than the Cena Title anyway which represents...Cena

For me, pretty much an "it was interesting once" sort of deal, and then I disliked attempts to do it again.
Custom side plates are okay, though.

Like a lot of things, it really depends on the character and angle. I could see it being good for a transition, like if a title belt design was retired, having a heel destroy the title in a fit, and the face using something custom "while a new title is commissioned" would work.

Am I the only person that isn't in love with that design? Like at all? Big Gold is my favorite of all time, BTW. As for the question... it depends if I like what it looks like. Or if I like the guy with the custom title. I'm definitely not against them, if used sparingly. Not a fan of that one at all. The original Biig Gold, that had some silver and different gems, is my favorite. As for custom titles, it needs to sense for someone to have one. At first, it made sense for Cena to have one but for it to become the standard was ridiculous. Love name plates on then though. The champion should be able to point to his/her name/logo on that title and how it is their property and they achieved something that so few have. I look at it like the Stanley Cup or to be more tied to wrestling, the IWGP titles. To be able to see who has had it and things like that makes the title and champ seem like a bigger deal Yeah, I don't even hate the Spinner Title, especially when it stopped spinning... but it really should never become the actual belt. That said I'd still take the spinner title over the current WWE belt... doubly so because EVERY Title is the same ugly giant belt buckle.

Or a heel having a custom title commissioned as an egotistical tribute to themselves. Then when a face beats them, he destroys the heel's trophy belt and brings back the true world title.

I loved the smoking skull belt, but someone should have taken the spinner belt and smashed it to look like the hardcore championship.

Custom titles are dumb. Having the WWE Championship stay a custom title for almost 10 years was really really dumb. The palette swaps of the 4 main WWE titles are really really really dumb.
I do prefer custom side plates to the name plate however.
