I realize I'm horrifically dating myself in asking this question.
Rented an N64 back in the day myself. It took me about a year to get one so that was my first exposure to the console, renting it and Mario 64. Funny enough not one of the first games I got when I actually did get my N64 - started my collection with Star Fox 64 and Diddy Kong Racing.

I once rented a 3DO and a few games from a (long defunct, obviously) local video rental place. I remember being really unimpressed with it and glad I had a NES, SNES and Genesis.
Oh, and I also rented a Virtual Boy (with Mario Tennis and probably one other game) from Blockbuster Video in 1995. I remember thinking "Boy, I'm glad I rented this instead of spending money to buy it- this is awful!".

Rented a Sega Saturn before I bought one. This would have been in the mid 1990s. I remember Bug and Virtua Fighter 2 were among the games I got with the rental.

We had a mom and pop video store where I lived that you could rent systems. Every now and again I'd rent a PS1.

Although the Aliens V Predator game they had looked incredible in mags.

I remember renting an NES in college so I could play/beat Super Mario 3.
That Christmas I got an NES with all three MArio games, a couple of the MegaMan titles and Dragon Warrior

Not from a store, but my Dad had an Intellivision and I'd borrow that on occasion.
And yes, I ask myself often why he had an Intellivision. Young me found it cool though.

Rented a Mega Drive once, should not have picked Comix Zone and Sonic Spinball as my games. Also rented a 64 with Gretzky 3D Hockey and Shadows of the Empire.
EDIT: Oh, Dad and I were house sitting for grandma once and rented an 64 and Mario 64 like a week or two after they came out. And about a year before I owned one

I rented out an X-BOX from Blockbuster cause I was really curious about Halo. Was not disappointed.

My parents rented me a Saturn and I got Iron Storm, King of Fighters (can't remember which one), and another game that I can't remember. Spent most of the time playing KoF.

my friend across the street rented a Virtual boy. I almost did... but my parents or grandparents scoffed when tehy said it needed 100 deposit in case of damage... But I did get a virtual boy that Christmas... and I loved that thing...

When the PS1 first came out my Dad would rent it for a weekend from the video store every 6 weeks or so.
Was amazing.

Only time I did was when my father was working out of state. I went to spend a week with him that summer. Rented a Genesis. He enjoyed so much he bought himself one. I had one at home, just didn't think to bring it with me.

My parents rented me the Super Nintendo when I was in kindergarten. It was waiting for me when I got home, and I remember excessively playing Super Mario World but getting stuck on Cheese Bridge before taking it back.
My dad surprised my friend and I when I got older with a PS2 in 2000. I would up getting one a month later for Christmas, but just being able to play that as a surprise for a sleep over was memorable. I still remember how loud that thing was when I entered the living room. We played Dynasty Warriors 2 and Silent Scope a lot that weekend, haha.
