The Black Adder: Edmund, Duke of Edinborough, bastard son of Richard IV, accidentally kills King Richard III and realizes his destiny to become King of England. He becomes the cunning, ruthless, and boneheaded Black Adder, served by Percy Percy and servant Baldrick.
Black Adder II: Lord Edmund Blackadder is a member of Queen Elizabeth's court, also including Lord Percy, Lord Melchett, and Nursie. Edmund also has a houseboy named Baldrick.
Black Adder The Third: Edmund Blackadder is a servant and butler under the rule of the idiotic George, Prince Regent of Wales. Also in the Prince's court is the houseboy, Baldrick.
Black Adder Goes Forth: Capt. Edmund Blackadder spends The Great War sitting in the trenches on the front lines, stuck with Lt. George and Pvt. Baldrick, who all dread the moment when they finally leave the trenches and charge into enemy territory.
Black Adder's Christmas Carol: Kind-hearted Edmund Blackadder and his servant Baldrick await the Christmas season, but Edmund receives a visit from a spirit who shows him that being the bad guy has its advantages.
Black Adder Back and Forth: On New Year's Eve 1999, Edmund Blackadder brags to his friends that he has built a time machine and will bring back relics from the past. His servant Baldrick, however, has accidentally built a real working time machine, and he and Edmund hop around to different time periods trying to get back home.

I'm going to say Fourth. It was outstanding. 2 & 3 were also brilliant.

Hmm.... I voted "The Black Adder" but it registered as Black Adder III. You know what, this poll is Baldrick'd.

I gotta say Blackadder II. Rowan with the beard was actually HOT. And has the best episodes, especially the one with the nutty religious fanatic relatives. "Cold air is God's way of telling us to burn more Catholics!" Living in Georgia, I've heard that many times directed at ME.

It's a tough one as i love them all. I think the 1st Series is probably the weakest. I would say 4 is my favourite though just for Baldrick's war poem and of course that end scene which never fails to give me goosebumps.
And calling somebody 'Darling' never gets old.

I loved the first series, mainly for Brian Blessed.

Possibly my favorite episode out of al of them is "Ink and Incapability" from Black Adder The Third, in which Baldrick burns Samuel Johnson's dictionary.
Blackadder: Baldrick, where is the manuscript? Baldrick: You mean the big papery thing tied up with string? Blackadder: Yes, the manuscript, belonging to Dr. Johnson... Baldrick: You mean the bainty fellow it the black coat who just left? Blackadder: Yes, Dr. Johnson... Baldrick: So, you're asking where the big papery thing tied up with string belonging to the bainty fellow in the black coat who just left, is. Blackadder: Yes, Baldrick. And if you don't tell me, then the booted bony thing with five toes at the end of my leg, will connectly sharply with the soft collection of dangly things in your trousers. Baldrick: Oh. Blackadder: So, where is Dr. Johnson's dictionary? Baldrick: On the fire. Blackadder: WHAT?! Baldrick: The hot orangey thing beneath the stony mantlepiece.

And while you have the comedy (in troves, of course), every series has a sad ending where someone/everyone dies.
