pitchfork.com/news/conan-obrien-to-launch-late-night-show-archive/They haven't announced many details-but this makes me think about the future of past programming-I have heard MTV was working on their archives as well, and what if these guys follow suit and become like a WWE network-perhaps you pay for exactly what you want-a la carte which cable should have done years ago-"rent" what you want, build your own lineup or something like that-the future archives for tv and such could be completely online-I know a lot is now, but I know I'd damn well pay for MTV i watched 35 years ago for example

I adored his Conan's late night run era circa 2002-2009 so I'll be all over this.

Nice. It will be worth it just to see the writer's striker episodes again.

I sort of wish Conan would do a throwback to Late Night for just one night, maybe even a one night return of his old characters.

Conan: And I know everyone wanted me to do the schtick from the Late Night show, but I felt I've moved on from that and want to go forward with this show. Audience Member: Wait a minute, you say you're not doing any of your late night bits? Conan:: ...Yeah I'm not doing any of them, it would be lazy and complete waste of this show's time. Audience Member: A complete waste of time? There's no reason to live! Where's my kayak?! Where's my kayak?! Not doing any of his late night bits, there's no reason to live anymore people!

I mostly would just want to see the episode where Big Show kills Tom Selleck's mustache.

I must be way out of the loop. How did he get the rights from NBC?

I must be way out of the loop. How did he get the rights from NBC? My guess is that he may have had a deal that gave NBC the broadcasting rights, but Conan has digital rights, thus why it'll be on a digital platform. Conan has always struck me as a guy who is pretty forward thinking, so he may have had an eye to the future when he signed on. I've always been a little fuzzy on the characters that are on Conan's show, I always thought that NBC owned the rights to the ones that appeared on Late Night, with the exception of Triumph, which is fully owned by Robert Smigel, thus why Triumph appears all over. But it also may be because Conan wanted to try different things after The Tonight Show, that's why bits like the celebrity interviews and the Satellite TV bits fell to the wayside. Those ideas aren't necessarily owned by NBC, just certain trademarks, and could have been easily redone on Conan. I think the big shame is that the Tonight Show episodes will still be absent. That was a really fascinating look into watching a show fall apart, and it was some of the most fascinating stuff to watch Conan deal directly with Jay trying to shoehorn himself back into the spotlight and NBC not backing him. I have a lot of those episodes on DVD, sadly, I didn't finalize a lot of them, and it may be impossible to play them back now.

I must be way out of the loop. How did he get the rights from NBC? I don't think the same people that were in charge of NBC during that 2009-2010 period when Conan left are in charge anymore, so it was likely easier to get permission to do this. Anyone know what's cut from the first episode of "Late Night" that's up on Conan's YouTube channel? It's only 38 minutes in length, plus there's a cut where it goes to commercial, then Drew Barrymore is sitting in the guest chair without an introduction shown.

This surprised me, but Conan did a clip show I think last year on TBS and he had a lot of NBC footage in it, celebrating his anniversary

Just let me watch that bit with Norm MacDonald savaging the idea of Chairman of the Board on a loop in HD until my brain dies.

Conan has always struck me as a guy who is pretty forward thinking, so he may have had an eye to the future when he signed on. It had to have been a recent deal. Conan and his managers didn't even put time-slot protection into his Tonight Show contract, which is the most basic thing a late-night host asks for. That's what started the whole debacle that led to his exile. There's no way they would have predicted something like the rise of streaming networks if they couldn't even craft a standard deal.

This is a big deal for me. I vividly remember watching Late Night every night during my early teens. A lot of the time I’d be on the phone with a friend or two, just dying at damn near every segment. Masturbating Bear, In The Year 2000, Frankenstein wasting a minute of our time, etc.
I can’t wait to dive into some of these classic memories.

So we get to see such gems as The Masturbating Bear, which I'm surprised even made it to network TV.
Also interesting about the MTV archives. I could watch old True Lifes, Diaries, and Rock n Jocks all day. I wonder what Dean Cain is up to these days.

I wonder what Dean Cain is up to these days. Looking over his Wikipedia page, it looks like he's spent the last few years mostly appearing in low-budget, under the radar movies and TV shows that don't warrant their own Wikipedia entries and the occasional Christian movie that Brad Jones likes to mock.
