I would say bad contracts in baseball at least have less of an impact for the top teams since the sport is capless. Even a bad A-Rod like contract won't stop the Yankees or Red Sox from being a playoff team with a stacked roster, whereas a shitty Knicks contract sets them back a few years before being able to reboot. Yea, baseball has no cap so it doesn't kill them as much but the "new" luxury tax rules which puts emphasis on staying under $196M I believe is essentially the hard cap now
Yankees are going to go under that for the first time in a long time and avoid paying penalties. It's not going to stop teams from spending but it does give a balance because you don't want to be paying penalties for a bummy team NBA contracts have been out of control but they seem to be coming back down with the cap coming down as well. You had guys like Evan Turner and Crabbe making $70M contracts as well as Mozgov. Players this year got a rude awakening as teams aren't throwing money at the wall anymore because they could.
The luxury tax has definitely impacted baseball, just look at free agency before the season started. Also, not only is there a tax, but it impacts the draft as well.

Not my team but I would have to guess, that the Angels giving Albert Pujols that monster Contract is up there. They paid out for him and he never was even close to what he once was. I just think that it could have been the Cardinals just as easily. Loved the guy and he WAS a great player. The Angels never got the player we saw in St. Louis. Sure he had some decent hitting seasons, not very many but a couple. Been dealing with foot and knee issues most of the run, and can no longer really play a position or run. Yeah, his plantar fasciitis really took a lot out of him. Dude has looked silly "running" for years. Which, he was always a competitor, you know that's just how poorly he moves now. There is still a large portion of the Cards fanbase who hates him, which is the craziest thing. He gave us maybe the best 10 year stretch of hitting ever for WAY below market value, then went somewhere else to cash out and decline. Dude should be seen as a god in St. Louis. People still hate him for leaving but I sit here and thinking if he stayed how as you said became the most hated player and people begging for him to be traded or whatever if he stayed because he wasn't hitting like he did and as U said unable to play a position. We saw him at his best and he brought up championships. He got the money he deserves just a shame it wasn't when he was playing at his pike, and he still does great things off the field. Just sad that his on field never was that for the money he was paid.

The Suns giving a way over the hill Shaq a contract. Trading away Shawn Marion for him wasn’t a smart move but giving up the fast style of play the team had been using successfully was enough to bring my piss to a boil. SMH what did they think they were getting? Rookie backboard breaking Shaq? I used to like Shaq but that move frustrated me to no end. Used to love getting NBA games back in the day and getting the Suns to win it all. I really miss carrying about basketball like I used to and getting invested with my team. From working at my first job at Pro Image and putting aside some money from my second check to either a Kevin Johnson or Dan Majerle Jersey. Or rooting for new acquisitions Ellicott Perry because he was fast and I liked he stood out from everyone else, or watching Michael Finley dunks. And of course seeing Nash and his crazy passes. Yup it used to be exciting being a Suns fan!

Gary Matthews Jr. -- 5 years $50 million, where the Halos ate half his contract to get rid of him. Josh Hamilton -- 5 years $125 million, again paid Texas and ate a huge part of his contract to get rid of him. Puljols stands to make $30 million when he turns 40, but at least he played decently. Nowhere near his peak seasons, but he can still ball. Kinda sad to see, though.

Orioles signed Chris Davis (not Khris Davis) to a huge deal and he's now the worst hitter in baseball. Also signed over the hill Sammy Sosa and Vlad Guerrero. At least Albert Belle gave them one good year.
That clown Jerry Jones trading multiple 1st round picks and a huge contract for the likes of Roy Williams (WR) who stunk beyond belief once he was traded.

That was the only way they can "afford him"
I believe Strausburgh has a similar clause in his contract where he defers future payment

Red Sox...
I’m going to say Pablo Sandoval
5 years $95 MIL
Or basically $700,000 per hit while in a Red Sox uniform that’s probably as bad a ratio that exists.
For a guy who ate his way out of the lineup..
Until this year I might have considered David Price but they wouldn’t have won the World Series without him this season so he’s got that.

In 2002, the Packers gave the Saints defender Joe Johnson a six-year, $33 million contract that included a $6.5 million signing bonus. What they got in return was two sacks in 11 games over two injury-filled seasons before they cut him. It was one in a long line of mistakes made by Mike Sherman during his tenure with the dual role of coach and general manager. Johnson never played another down in the NFL after the Packers dumped him in June 2004.

Starting with the Celtics, back in 1994 the original Big 3 had left and the Celtics should have started rebuilding but instead they tried a number of questionable signings in a desperate attempt to stay relevant. The worst of these signings was Pervis Ellison who was given a 6 year $11.55 million dollar deal despite a history of chronic injuries that earned him the nickname "Not in Service" Pervis. Sure enough his injury problems followed him to Boston. He missed the first half of his first season with the Celtics and it only got worse from there. He would play in half a season just twice during his run with the C's and wasn't that effective when he was on the court. Joke going around the league was how Pervis was always out to the point he was coming out with his own line of inactive wear.

Toronto Raptors - Landry Fields, three years and $18.75M (2012)
Toronto Blue Jays - B.J. Ryan, five years and $47M (2006)

Jared Jeffries: He was just a bum overall
I was a fan of the guy personally (local boy who led my alma mater on a Cinderella run and then made the pros, after all), I felt the Knicks massively overpaid him. Still, it isn't fair to call him a bum. He stuck around the league for 13 years, did better than others, and retired to go to the executive side of the league.

Red Sox- Rusney Castillo
He never played in a MLB game and they gave him a $72mm contract. He was so bad they outrighted him to the farm team and he's been there ever since.
