I lost my full time job back in April. I did have a really well paying part time job (adjunct faculty member) but I had to cash out my retirement to pay the bills and fix up some stuff at my house in the event I had to sell it.
I did find a decent temporary job selling insurance of all things, but have recently started at a new full time job. It pays a smidgen more that the job I lost in April (like $500/yr more), but it is in town (meaning the daily commute to and from work is literally 2 hours shorter than the last job), I did pay off some things with that retirement money meaning my monthly bills are noticeably lower than they were before (meaning that small raise is amplified in the short term), and it is a job that will provide me with certain experience and skills that will make it so much easier to find work should I need to in the future (not to mention it is more along the lines of what I would like to work on).
All in all, it worked out fine enough for me, though I do need to start using those savings on monthly expenses and lesser commute expenses to start rebuilding my retirement nest egg.

The wife didn’t feel like cooking a big dinner for Thanksgiving. Instead we just went to Universal Studios for the day. Got there when the park opened. Light crowds all day. The kids were well behaved. We got to see the Harry Potter Xmas light show. Almost no traffic on the freeways all the way home. It was a great day.

I fell asleep unemployed and woke up with a job. I interviewed with an agency yesterday, and woke up to a bunch of texts this morning asking me to start today because the business fired the person in the job last night, and need someone to start asap. The business didn't even want to interview me themselves, or reference check me first. Such a relief, I was starting to worry I'd still be jobless at Christmas.

Too bad about the last guy, but hey, Ultimate Opportunist, right?

I snagged my ticket for Pirates Opening Day. Yay for Internet pre-sales! My mom’s Christmas present arrived today. Would you folks like to see it? This is early morning on the boardwalk in Ocean City, New Jersey. Would you believe that I took this picture? I did, and here’s the original: I’m pretty proud of myself because I had no idea how to convert a digital photo into something you can hang on the wall. So I hit up Google and came across the Shutterfly website. It was so easy; I just picked the size, frame, and background and the site did the rest. I got a projected delivery date of November 27-28, so it was cool to get it a week early. Thats a really beautiful picture- nicely done! She'll love it.

I got to say "I'll be back" to the desk clerk at a police station today. And then you created a new Drive-In space for the building?

I've been fixing a problem at work for about a year and knew it was going to have a big cost when it got worked out. I called a meeting with the Finance department to get approval for a $77,000 write off. It ended up being me, a cost accountant, two senior accountants, the Global Finance Manager, and........the CFO. And by the time the meeting hit, I was looking at a $92,000 write off.
I laid out all my paperwork explaining what I needed and how long I had been working on it. CFO looks at GFM and tilts her head at me. "Is he always this well prepared?" GFM and senior accountant spend ten minutes telling her what great work I do and how valuable I am to the company. CFO smiles at me, says "good work", and walks out the door.
I thought I was going to get chewed out. Ended up getting a pat on the back from a top executive.

I like this thread.
In January I'll get an automatic cost of living 2.5% pay increase. I'll put that extra hundred and some change towards my truck payment, and pay it off that much faster.
It's still weird for me to be at a department that treats its staff so well. At my old department, we averaged one staff suicide a year.

My wife and I had our son in May of this year...Raising daughters has been amazing but there is just something different between a dad and his son...Every time i get off work and come home from the office my son (Rocky) will start laughing when he sees me like we have an inside joke that only we know...Plus hes six months and likes wrestling (he gets all excited and starts kicking when its on) and funny enough he likes playing with the Stone Cold mattel retro (hasbro style)

Well, my wife and I confirmed that she's pregnant today. Had our first ultrasound this morning, and heartbeat is going strong. Thought I'd be done since the youngest is 10 now, but time to start all over again!

Sister just sent me my nephews note to Santa Ha! I kid you not, opened up my 10-year-old daughter's 'Letter to Santa' that she wrote on Thanksgiving this last weekend for my gift shopping...she not only listed out everything she wanted from the Target Toy Book that we got in the mail, but she even clipped the $20 coupon and shoved it in there, which of course it's already expired by the time I see it! ...definitely going miss having her at this level of wonder in a few years, the teens are past that age and aren't nearly as fun with it.

File this under 'taking matters into your own hands'. For the longest time, out cable box needed replacing. All we needed to do was call the cable company and they'd do it for no extra charge. We're a lazy family, so it took a while to actually make that call. The other reason that the other people in our family were hesitant to call was that our house was a mess and we'd be 'embarrassed' when the cable person saw it apparently. This past week however, we've been in the process of mass-cleaning the house, so basically I called the company yesterday on my own volition, and they'll be coming today. No one was too mad, not that I thought they would be TOO mad, though.
Also, our neighbor/family friend DOESN'T have cancer, just a 'calcification' in her chest. She got it double checked and confirmed yesterday, we were worried what news she might've needed to break to us once she got home from the doctor's appointment yesterday. Luckily it was the non-terrible kind of news. (A calcification is NOT lethal at all, for the record.)
