"School Raze"...gets a 9/10 from me.

Pros:
-Cozy Glow...may be one of the most awesome villains this show has ever created, mostly because she started off like such an innocent filly back in "Marks For Effort", but through subtle hints in "Friendship University" and "What Lies Beneath" we grew more and more suspicious until we finally saw her true face in this two-parter. And she was really an entertaining villain in this episode: cunning, manipulative, power-hungry but also extremely insane (no thanks to some really unnerving faces they animated for her in this one), she simply chewed up every bit of scenery she was involved in. And it was satisfying to see how she had everything in the palm of her hand by the end of the episode only for one simple misjudgment to become her undoing. And to misread the teachings of the School Of Friendship so horribly like that takes a certain amount of effort as well. Have to say, I was unsure until I saw this episode, but I'd say she fully deserves being sentenced to Tartarus.

-Speaking of that place, seeing Tirek again was also a blast. Going into this episode, I thought he had no involvement at all with this plot but the reveal of being pen pals with Cozy Glow certainly came as a surprise to me. He too ran the full gamut from being gloatingly evil to having some hilarious moments like him getting his nerves wrecked so much by Pinkie Pie that he decided to help the Mane Seven to escape from Tartarus. Really liked his presence here.

-To get to Tartarus to finally see the place in person was certainly neat to watch and getting to see some of the beasts from past seasons again like the bugbear, the chimera, the Season 6 version of the Manticore etc. was also nice to see. Though I have to say that it is less vast of a space as I thought.

-The Mane Six B plot was a good change of pace from the major plot by seeing the mane seven working together to escape their imprisonment (again demolishing the silly notion of the show being about "Princess TWilight and her five Shinpachi Shimuras) with everypony playing a part in getting out of the prison. The Cutie Mark Crusaders also had some sweet scenes involving Cozy Glow although the latter eventually found out about their plot.

-The Young Six also were pretty neat in their group scenes and had a very good showing in this two-parter (with the strongest being, surprisingly, Sandbar who had been the most non-noteworthy of all of them so far). That the Tree Of Harmony resonated with them so much was awesome to watch and provided for a good climax in this finale.

-In general, I loved the good progression of the plot through the mystery of the disappearing magic to setting up Chancellor Neighsay as a sort of red herring in all this to Cozy's reveal and her plan until the final battle. Certainly one of the few two-parters where most hairs did not feel out of place.

Cons:
-I am sorry but after being portrayed as an unlikable bigoted asshole for all his appearances in Season 8, I am not that warm with Chancellor Neighsay's face turn in the end. While I don't mind Cozy Glow's villainy and feel that her revelation was a good twist, it would have felt somehow more natural for Neighsay to be the finale villain. Yeah, the face turn felt very flat with me.

-Would have liked more for the individual members of the Young Six (well, except Sandbar) to shine throughout the 2-parter. Instead, it was mostly a group effort without any real distinction between them.

-Some of the beasts imprisoned in Tartarus like the chimera and the manticore felt really weird seeing there, as we last saw them in the world outside.


So, not really the best Season Finale as I boasted but still pretty good. 9/10 is fully deserved.
