What the hell did he think was going on after he wished it so?

George didn't know what was going on, he was expecting a Pooka and got an Angel 2nd class instead.

While I love this movie and all, one thing I never cared for was that after all of the crappy things that happened in the dark timeline it was Mary's fate of becoming a spinster that drove George back from the edge. Yeah sure it sucked she never married, but at least she would have lived and have a steady job as the town librarian to boot.
I mean she could have died as a child like George's brother, become a pennyless wreck like all of the people that Potter drove out of business, got shipped off to the loony bin like Uncle Billy or become a whore like Violet did. Yeah I think Mary got off easy there.

I think I've seen dozens of parodies of It's a Wonderful Life, but I've never actually watched It's a Wonderful Life.

Yeah I think Mary got off easy there. This used to be a huge gripe for me as well, but then I listened to the radio version that the original cast/writer/director did a decade or so later and they go into further detail about the scene. It wasn't so much Mary's fate as George seeing the love of his life that unhappy, regardless of the circumstances. That was the person who meant the most to him, and he knew he had to go back for her. It really shed some much needed light on that scene. I highly recommend giving it a listen.

Well Butt-Head never wished it, his guardian angel was trying to make him die. And the lesson: the world sucks, but it sucks worse without him.
