So weird a surprise has never been 1. I know Goldust in 2002 was 2 but he was announced. Off the top of my heaf I know Jericho was 2 one year.

Not a surprise return, but Demolition being 1 and 2 in '89 and then actually fighting each other was a huge surprise at the time.

I can’t think of any besides Jericho in 2013. I know AJ was 3 when he debuted.

Wasn’t Bob Backlund a surprise in 1993?
Wasn’t that his first match back in the WWF in like a decade? I don’t think he was announced.

I figure it's mainly just because people like the surprise entrants (I know I really do, it's probably my favourite thing about the Rumbles) and so they want to hold them back a little rather right out of the gate.

Was Bob Backlund the first ever surprise entrant? In 2000 he wasn't on the main roster and I'm struggling to think of any earlier ones. Unless it's the Mankind/Cactus/Dude trilogy we got.

There were a couple of random entrants in the mid nineties. Dick Murdoch, The Samoan Swat team, Doug Gilbert, Dory Funk, Onari, the Mexicans in 1997.

Was Nikolai Volkoff a surprise return in 1992? It seems like I don't remember seeing him for a while before that.

Was Nikolai Volkoff a surprise return in 1992? It seems like I don't remember seeing him for a while before that. He replaced an injured guy either Janetty or one of the Nastys. I can’t remember if they said anything in the build up but at the very least they mentioned him earlier in the show saying he’s a replacement, Haku was another replacement that year.

There was also the surprise of having Shawn and Taker start as #1 and #2 the year after they stole the show as the final two the year before.
It was a neat little callback.

I know it's not 1 or 2, but that young whipper snapper Carlos Colon was a surprise for me when it happened.

They were just injury replacements for Marty Jannetty and Brian Knobbs respectively.

True, but they weren't advertised, and weren't under contract, so it's not inaccurate to say they were surprise entries either.
