So I went and saw this last night for New Years Eve. It was a really good movie. Some historical inaccuracies, but still a good movie, nonetheless.
Saoirse Ronan was great as Mary, and Margot Robbie was an excellent Queen Elizabeth I. They both made those roles their own, and they brought the two cousin queens to life.
I remember seeing the trailer for this when it came out, but I forgot David Tennant (10th Doctor) was in this. He was phenomenal as John Knox.
I'm not sure about their portrayal of Lord Darnley in this one. He was known to be vain, arrogant, and somewhat violent. Also, he was a drunkard. The only thing I really noticed that was the same was that he was a drunkard in this one as well.
And despite the few historical inaccuracies, I still thought it was a really good movie. It wouldn't surprise me to see it snatch a few Academy Award nominations.

I enjoyed it too. There's always going to be inaccuracies in these movies, but the movie was pretty historically accurate, all things considered. Lord Darnley was rumoured to gave been... effeminate but he was also very unpopular and it was probably just a means to discredit him.

Not seen it, but I have to ask .. it’s history so I don’t know if I should spoiler tag it.. I will just to be safe {Spoiler}did they do Mary’s execution accurately? Meaning it was quite bloody, and when they lifted the severed head to show the crowd, they dropped it (they didn’t know he was wearing a wig) and it fell into the crowd..

So we don't get that part.

I wonder if they did film the execution but cut it out for reasons {Spoiler}I'd be intrigued if that's a deleted scene. The movie's rated R, but I didn't feel it was a R-rated movie. Yes, there was some sex, a little nudity, and a small bit of violence, but nothing that felt like it was R-rated.

I think the only big inaccuracy I could think of was: {Spoiler}The meeting between Elizabeth and Mary. I've read some history and I think on the tours in Scotland when we were there stated that Mary and Elizabeth never met face to face in their lives.

I wonder if they did film the execution but cut it out for reasons Without spoiling anything, the movie was already a non-stop kick in the pants so I think leaving the bloody details out was for the best. I thought for an R-Rated movie, there wasn't much in it that I felt categorized it as R-Rated. There was a small bit of violence and some adult situations, and a small bit of nudity, but nothing major.
