I got the job in late November and I was let go today... seemingly for “poor performance” which baffled me honestly. I asked her to elaborate and she said that she didn’t see any improvement on the training I received. Which is a lie because I was flying recently after becoming familiar with everything.
The job was retail and although the hours were crap, I was really enjoying the experience. I have social anxiety issues aswell and I can’t help but think this shown through in my performances... like I said I wanted to improve my social skills mostly.
I dunno. I just feel like every time I land a job, I have this voice in the back of my head saying “They’re gonna let you go”... I can’t shake this feeling and in this case, I was right.
Anyone ever in a similar situation?

Damn, that sucks. You'll bounce back.
I'm working a 9-5 that I'm dedicating to quit this year. I'm tired of working 9-5s so whatever it takes, I'm out. Either way at my current job there's always rumblings of people being let go due to the fact that anyone's job these days that can be done by machines, those jobs aren't secure. With that said I don't worry that I'm going to be let go. I just hope that I can get in a position quickly that I can leave on my own terms.

I'm a federal employee. Agency has enough funding to ride out a short shutdown but after that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Rumor around the office is that our positions were deemed essential last time so we'll work without pay until the shutdown is over then get back pay

Sounds like they just wanted extra people just for the holidays. That still sucks. Maybe you'll get something better this time around, you got this.

I started my current job at Costco and that first month was nerve racking. I felt like I was on a fog. Didn't know what I was doing. Dropped stuff and felt I had to try so hard just to keep on the job. Thankfully the fog broke before the 3 month try out period and I'm good at what I do. Now its a road block but that's another story

Now its a road block but that's another story I feel like I was getting used to it... and then she broke the news to me. I’m not gutted about losing the job, I’m more gutted about the fact that I couldn’t even keep a job like that. I don’t know what the future holds for me to be honest. I’m 26, no education or anything. I’m doing acting classes this month as it’s something I’m passionate about but I doubt it’s gonna pay the bills. Unfortunately my lack of social skills always work against me, no matter if it’s jobs, girls, whatever. Hate to turn this into a self pity thread by the way. I’m looking at improving myself but it’s hard when nobody takes a proper chance on you.

Sounds like it was just help for the holidays and they just found an excuse to let you go when they didn’t need you.

Sorry to hear that dude. I was let go from my very first job after like two weeks for "not learning fast enough" and it really shook my confidence for a while. I took it pretty hard but I never forgot it and used it as motivation to do well in my next job and every job after that. That voice of doubt is still there sometimes and I think everyone struggles with it a little but what I've learned is that pretty much everyone is faking it till they make it and you just gotta keep pushing through.
Sorry if that was rambly but I hope some part of it helps and that things work out for you.

Anyone ever in a similar situation? I always have this fear. Even when I may be doing well, I have the worry "Am I really actually doing well, or am I doing shit and not realizing?" I always find it effects my performance too because I lose confidence. So I then end up fulfilling my fears by actually doing shit. Guess I'm the sort of worker who needs a "great job," or a "Well done" every once in a while. I

At any time since you started did they take you aside to say they weren't happy? If not, then how would you know they wanted you to improve? In my first job at 19 - just stacking shelves - I was told twice that I needed to improve, and actually taken to a manager's office to be told this. Realising that I couldn't even stack shelves properly did nothing for my confidence, I can tell you, but I improved and it all ended well.
However, the point is that they told me to improve and gave me the chances to do so. If them letting you go is out of the blue then not only is it not fair but it's also a bit underhand. Don't let it get to you, though - there'll be other jobs for you which you'll excel at. Hang in there, my friend - it might suck now, but it'll get better for you.

I had two long tedious stories typed out, but, just be dependable man. And be honest. Those are the qualities that will help you along. More than anything, be those.

I'm currently in a situation where my manager is actively trying to get me fired, but being just clever enough to not leave enough evidence of what she's doing so I can't make a complaint to HR.

It is icnredible how many shitty bosses there is. Where I work they were having interns from mandatory intership from the university. And they knew their shit, got their work done while most people that had a guaranteed job there didn't do shit. And my boss(which is never there and loves surrounding himself with yes mans) had the galls to blast the interns when it was time to send the reviews because they didnt" respect his authoritah" enough.

Anyone ever in a similar situation? That's the unfortunate reality of any job in retail in the fourth quarter of the year. Most of the time they're merely doing it for seasonal purposes, with a very small amount actually being kept on after the fact due to less workers needed. I've gone through my fair share of releases in the holidays (one let me go on Christmas Eve when I was originally promised a 6-month extension), but all you can really do is file your unemployment claims and get back on the saddle as quickly as possible. This particular manager and the company in question likely needs to go through better training themselves when it comes to handling these kinds of things, but they aren't your problem anymore so I wouldn't personally even worry about what they said or think at this point. A silver lining about this whole situation is that the vast majority of companies are resetting their budgets at the beginning of the year (as well as need for people to cover while they're going through tax season), so several (non-retail) office jobs will likely start appearing on your radar soon as well. Just be patient, don't let your past situations overwhelm you since your job isn't your life, and keep pressing on either way. You'll eventually find a place that accepts you for who you are and will accommodate you no matter what your concerns or anxieties may be.

My boss doesn't like me because despite having worked my job for six years and being damn good at it, I constantly raise questions about some of the policies she and her predecessor implemented. In the two years the pair of them were in charge, literally every aspect of the business nosedived to the point where we went from one of the best performing sites in the region to one of the worst, which led to her predecessor being given a "jump or be pushed" ultimatum. Rather than listen to my suggestions on how to improve things, she doubled down on what she was doing (and things have not improved) and... - asked a co-worker to file a fake complaint against me (they refused) - began monitoring me on CCTV (which is against company policy) - started a whispering campaign amongst the staff that I sleep on the job, and it's just a matter of time before she catches me. Thankfully, because I am so good at my job, and I carry a Fitbit on me at all times, therefore proving that I am active when it is claimed I am sleeping, I'll likely ride it out long enough for her boss to finally get tired of the poor performance of the site and move her along.

Anyone ever in a similar situation? Got f***ed over like that at Future Shop years ago. Interviewed for a full time permanent position, they phoned me and hired me to a part time permanent position and then when I showed up to orientation and training I was told it was a seasonal position with the potential for permanent. So, the f***ery had already started. Sure as shit, we get past Boxing Day, and it's about a week til layoff day. And nobody is telling me anything. This goes on all week, until finally on layoff day I cornered my department manager and asked what the hell was going on, the Store Manager had been dodging me he patted me on the shoulder and said "Oh yeah. Sorry bud" and I walked out.

that sucks, sounds like you were taken on as a Christmas temp and then let go. it is usually about now when the seasonal extra staff are let go (multiple years in retail myself and witness this every year at this time.)
