I finally got around to watching it yesterday. Has anyone else seen it? What did you think?
I loved that there was a sideplot of pure wrestling vs. sports entertainment type stuff even back then!

I saw it, and it's way better than the remake with Robert DeNiro.

great movie Richard Widmark in a perfect role. The film noir genre is a perfect fit for the wrestling underbelly, I wish old more movies went this route instead of boxing.

Such an awesome movie and shockingly downbeat in a lot of ways. The line about Harry Fabian being "an artist without an art" is one of my favorite lines in a movie. For what it's worth Stanislaus Zbyszko did in fact do an unscripted shoot on Wayne Munn in the 1920s to regain the world title, mainly because he felt Munn was a joke as champion that wasn't a legit wrestler. So he was walking the walk that he did in this movie.

Despite being a gimmick wrestler I think the Strangler would have wiped the floor with him especially if he downed a fifth before the fight. Gregorious was the best though. Even long past his prime he was still kicking ass. It really showed how far Greco-Roman wrestling must have declined by 1950 that Gregorious would admire Nikolas so much.

Gregorious was a straight shooter. I like this movie a lot, partly because I am a Gene Tierny fan. The remake is outdated and didn't make sense for the era, boxing was too big a sport for some neighborhood scammer to be even a blip on the radar. Ironically, if the producers weren't so ashamed to be associated with wrestling, you could have updated it for the time with wrestling and money marks.

Another great moment was from Francis L. Sullivan when Googie Withers was leaving him for Widmark, starting her own club, etc. He was ranting like "Once Fabian rips you off you'll come crawling back to me!" And then almost under his breath: "And I'll probably take you back."
Tierney didn't get much to do here really. Same case as another awesome movie she was in the same year, Where the Sidewalk Ends. Now that was a hard edged noir with the best Dana Andrews performance this side of Best Years of Our Lives.
