I’ve tried to list a bunch of “the top guy”s here who would have spearheaded the company for a time.
I don’t think Undertaker was ever near “the guy” category so he isn’t here but you can vote for him under “other” if you want.
This is a poll which asks when you rewatch old wrestling which character do you most enjoy revisiting?

Just an aside, I grew up with 98-2001 Austin (mainly 99-2001 really).
Rewatching his 96/97 run was an absolute treat. Greatest and most intense guy I’ve ever seen in wrestling.

I'll say Austin. His prime still really holds up for the most part.
Rock's a little hit and miss as a face, but I still enjoy the matches.
Bret and HBK's matches are still great, even though HBK as a character in 1996 sucked.

Punk and The Rock are the only top guys in my fandom that I remotely enjoyed.

Punk and The Rock are the only top guys in my fandom that I remotely enjoyed. They were both great Indeed. Don’t know why I worded it like I was lukewarm on them. The rest of them (my fandom began around Austin’s time, but he held me back from being a full-time fan) were awful to me though.

Batista....first main event star that my wife and I both liked, so he gets the nod for personal reasons

If I had to choose a top three, it would be Bret, then Macho, then Austin. So Bret got my vote here.

If Austin's character debuted today it would still be popular.
Many of the others would feel dated, like they're specific to their generation.
Hogan debuted today, he'd be hated until he underwent a character change, but the original Hogan character wouldn't work today (Hogan would succeed with a different character because of his charisma though). Same as Rock, his humour would, I think, be looked down on as lame today. Again he'd succeed because of his huge charisma but it would be with a different character.
Austin's though would work in any generation. It's a timeless character.

Easily Michaels for me. Though not his second run, anything mid to late 90s.

I think you could make an argument for Edge to be on this list. He's pretty much forgotten these days but he was the top heel from 06-11.
I voted for Triple H as 2000 was my favourite year in wrestling as I was watching at the time. Retroactively I love Steve Austin and don't think anybody will come close to an arc like his.
