Why do some wrestlers not wear their kneepads on their knees? The most famous example I can think of is Ric Flair having them on his shins (purposely - I never saw them pulled up over his knees even at the start of matches), and Ahmed Johnson having kneepads on his thighs for some reason.
So is there a reason some guys (And girls) work with their pads down?

Lance Storm explained once that some guys wear them lower because you fall on your shins more than you do your knee caps during most matches. Also, that some guys would do it to hide if they had small calves.

You do land on your shins a lot more so it makes sense to have them lower.

I dunno, it was an interesting look. Without them he's just a muscle guy in red trunks.

Weird coincidence: I'm watching a Spectrum show last night from February 1983. Curt Hennig vs. Jose Estrada in the opener. Curt has those odd looking ones on his knees; Dick Graham & Gorilla explained what they were. There's no pads (they're like thick bands), it is there to support the ligaments in the knees. They're lighter and less cumbersome and are supposed to cut down on knee injuries. "Some guys prefer the extra padding." So I thought I'd throw that out there. (A lot of these guys didn't wear anything on their knees. And almost every one of them used a knee drop or had offense that used knees as a wear-down move.) Finlay, Cody, and Chris Masters wore them like that too. Cody has those bird legs with no definition & no calves. One thing that bothers me because I sympathize. If I was a wrestler, I'd have kneepads just to show where my knees are supposed to be located.

Wearing them on the shin, now that I know it has a legit explanation, is fine.
Wrestlers wearing no kneepads at all? GOD I hate it, and the bigger the wrestler, the more I hate it.

Honestly in Ahmed's case I think it kind of did? Certainly did a lot more to make him stand out visually than something more standard would have since you strip that away he's a pretty generic-looking big guy, but he had just the right look to pull it and I doubt much of anybody else could have.

The worst is the new guy that WWE just signed who just wears shorts I think. No shoes, no pads, no tape, just almost naked dude in boxer shorts. WHY???

Or you could just wear MORE KNEEPADS! I'm pretty sure I did this with my action figures if I wanted them to switch up their look but had no accessories or actual good ideas. Wearing them on the shin, now that I know it has a legit explanation, is fine. Wrestlers wearing no kneepads at all? GOD I hate it, and the bigger the wrestler, the more I hate it. I hate it with some, like it with others. Depends on the guy. Minoru Suzuki in shitty little Roderick Strong boots and trunks somehow works for him. For most people, including others in his stable, not so much. It always strikes me as a very "old school catch-as wrassler" look, and not many can pull that off without it looking lame.

Guessing it's a mobility thing, like how some guys try and do barefoot. (Most stop after a foot injury or two ) I know Lance Storm favored ring shoes with kickpads instead of boots because he didn't want to compromise his vertical leap or other stuff, but I don't see ring shoes very often. Suzuki wears them, I think, but maybe most people pick boots for aesthetics.

I imagine because of his MMA background, wearing boots and knee pads is alien to him. A previous poster mentioned Minoru Suzuki wearing short boots and no pads and I imagine it’s for the same reason. I actually like his look, it’s unusual so makes him stand out a little more, and in a strange way fits in with his relaxed surfer/stoner character.
