As a side hustle I sell things online. Recently, I’ve been thinking of expanding to selling outside the US and Canada seems like the first logical step. That said shipping isn’t cheap. I tend to sell new and used media (books, DVDs. etc.). I’d only bother shipping bulk orders to them, so roughly 3 to 7 pounds an order or so. I’ve heard you cannot use media mail for international orders. So what is the cheapest option and how much would I be (ballpark figure)? I’ve heard FedEx May have cheaper options than USPS, but figured I’d ask around

I've never had any problems with shipping to Canada, through UPS.

I've never had any problems with shipping to Canada, through UPS. You're lucky. I know from personal experience that UPS tacks on surprise 'brokerage fees' for items that national postal carriers never charge when shipping across the border. And the fees are imposed upon the recipient despite UPS costing more money to use than the national carriers, paradoxically.

As long as you say the value of whAtever is in the package is 10 bucks or under there isn't any brokerage fee.

I used the USPS International Postage Calculator and I think just doing their priority flat box rates may be my best bet. I did it earlier so I’m going off memory but I believe it was $26.95 for up to 4 pounds then a hair under $50.00 for up to 20 pounds.

Although it is a bit silly you can ship a book from San Diego, California to Jackman, Maine for $2.66, but it you ship that same book just a few more miles North it’ll cost you $10 more or so. Anyway, I’m still curious about better prices.

A Canadian friend sent me something for Christmas through UPS. She shipped it on the 17th, it first claimed the order would arrive on the 21st, was delayed due to "bad weather" though I checked the weather there and it said it was clear-skies where the package had stopped at, and finally arrived on the 4th. When I looked around, this apparently is common for UPS so may want to keep that in mind as well.

I usually stick to USPS as it is for my shipping needs. I buy from one business based in Canada that ships with USPS. It usually takes just a week or so for things to get from Toronto to Greater Boston. Fairly cheap shipping too as it ranges from $20 to $35 for about 3 to 7 pounds of stuff. I haven't found shipping that cheap myself and to the best of my knowledge USPS doesn't actually offer shipping that cheap so they must be eating some of the cost.

Used to ship from Canada to the US for work several times a month, always found that Canada Post was cheapest option. The few time we shipped by courier were around double the cost... they get there much faster of course, but a lot of times the customer would prefer to save a little money and wait a little longer.
So, check the Post Office and their parcel service.
Another thing, I live in a small town with no UPS or FedEx depot, so anything shipped that way takes extra time to find a location for pick-up. We do have Purolator and DHL/Loomis, but only because some stores have depots as a 'side' moneymaker. Canada Post is everywhere.
