First of all, a link to the site of the game: www.hytale.com
And the trailer for the game:
Discovered this yesterday thanks to a CaptainSparklez video and I immediately fell in love, so I'd like to take this opportunity to spread the word and hopefully share some thoughts with other people who are excited for it.
Basically, from what I could gather from the site and the trailer, this is a sandbox survival game, obviously inspired by Minecraft, but that will actually focus fairly heavily on plot. From what little they've revealed so far, it seems you'll get to go on stand-alone quests, and through those, you'll piece together the overarching story. And while obviously it'll be possible to play it like any other survival game and just make a base, grow crops, raise cattle, etc... it does seem to be designed to promote adventuring.
What we do know about quests is that the devs have already stated that there will be many different "scenarios" and with them saying that "no two adventures will be the same", it strongly implies that they will be randomized. They've also stated that dungeons and other structures will contain objectives and challenges. So clearly there's going to be some sort of goal right off the bat. Note that the devs have already mentioned a being called Gaia, as well as the five elements of this world, so my theory is that you'll have to collect a macguffin representing one of the elements in each zone, especially since they've already shown (though there are two more hidden ones). Somebody light up the ProJared signal!
What's interesting too is that they refer to the various weather areas as "Zones", and each one is numbered, which makes me wonder if you're supposed to visit them in order. The devs also mention that each zone contains its own set of biomes, but they don't use the term the same way Minecraft does, as they use it more to refer to forests, crevices, lakes, mountains and other geological oddities. So I'm not sure if that means we'll be ab le to see different types of land at the same time (I can't help but notice that all screenshots and gameplay footage shown so far only showed one zone at a time) and I'm guessing their version of biome is done so the generation is more consistent, as I also noticed there doesn't appear to be any floating island or anything like that.
This brings me to the graphics and I have to say, I really like them a lot! While the environments still have the kinda-sorta voxel thing going on with big cubes, I like that they also added a lot of different assets that break that aesthetic a bit and make it look a lot nicer. They also seem to have put a lot of efforts into their animations. Characters aren't just a bunch of boxes waving their arms around. Looking at their concept art, they also appear to have plenty of variation on their basic mobs. Speaking of that, I really like that they have some very creative ones. Sure, you have your typical skeletons and stuff like that, but they've already shown some creepy giant bug things (which apparently enslave other mobs), sabretooth tigers, sharks, some orc-type creatures, Jellyfishes, some Metroid-Beholder looking motherf'ers, some really creepy giant zombie things that have been cut in half and are crawling on their hands, dinosaurs, etc, etc...
And the same goes for flora as they've already created tons of various trees, flowers, mushrooms, algae, etc... in fact, generally speaking, what amazes me most about this is that, despite only announcing the game one month ago apparently-although it seems they've been working on it in secret for two years), it already seems to have a lot more content than Minecraft itself, or any copycat.
Another thing I really appreciate and you don't see nearly enough in survival games is that they're putting a lot of work into having creatures and NPCs interact with one-another in complex ways, making the world feel a lot more alive. They've already mentioned on their site that animals will do stuff like hunt one-another, move in packs, etc, and there WILL be sentient NPCs, whose villages aren't just for trading either. They've got their own culture, you'll get to go on quests for them and form ties with them, that kind of stuff. They have already introduced a friendly NPC type and an "enemy" type, and the devs have already confirmed that there will be different factions and sub-types of characters. I think this kind of stuff really encourages you to go explore and do the quests given to you, as it makes it all the more worthwhile when you do stuff to protect someone and see the impact you have on people rather than just for the sake of better loot. I've also noticed on screenshots and gameplay footage that they've shown a very large-looking city with a port, though they don't say if such things will occur naturally in the game world or if they built that in-game, or if it's a pre-made multiplayer map.
And yeah, speaking of multiplayer, if you're into that, that's another thing they want to be a big part of the game (although not forced onto people who prefer to go it alone), especially since the team is famous for their Hypixel server on Minecraft, which is full of multiplayer mini-games. There's coop exploration of course, but they've already planned a ton of mini-games as well.
And last but not least, the best part to me is that they're really pushing customization. Not only does it seem like there are lot of ways to customize your character right off the bat, what really gets me excited is that they've immediately announced that the game will come with several tools that they use themselves to create content, allowing players to create pretty much anything they want, from new creatures to new items, to new pieces of clothing, and even modify gameplay mechanics and stuff like that. They did say they intend to put limitations on gameplay changes to avoid abuse but other than that, the sky's the limit.
So yeah, in case I haven't made it clear yet, I am super hyped for this as this is basically what I've been looking for years. Needless to say, I have immediately applied for the beta. Anyone else looking forward to it?
