Wipped out the N64 and played this beauty of a game.
Big question is why did this game not have any wrestler themes in it? In fact, did any WCW games feature accurate themes?

Wipped out the N64 and played this beauty of a game. Big question is why did this game not have any wrestler themes in it? In fact, did any WCW games feature accurate themes? Lack of themes was due to the N64 cartridges not being ideal for music or full motion video. Its why both are gimped so badly when they finally did show up in the WWF AKI games years later. In terms of WCW song accuracy you'd sadly have to look at the likes of Mayhem and Backstage Assault for a range of music beyond the Nitro, Thunder, or nWo themes. As far as World Tour, its amazing how much of a game changer this was. For all intents and purposes, it was the Super Mario 64 of wrestling titles, bringing the genre into the 3rd dimension and largely defining a lot of the grapple and strike system that was expected from future games. There were things you could do in World Tour that even 10 years after its release you couldn't do in the Smackdown games, and with a sense of organic flow that only Fire Pro ever matched or surpassed.

I liked playing as some of the "fictional" wrestlers such as Hannibal (Hayabusa) and Black Widow (Manami Toyota) in that game.
Not sure about why the WCW themes and entrances weren't in, since some of the WWE games were also on N64 cartridges, and had real themes (even if they were midis or shorter than real life). Memory space?
I do know that the AKI WCW games originated from the Virtual Pro Wrestling series in Japan.
There was a midi version of the Nitro theme in Revenge.

Just realized I put this in the wrong thread. A little help mods?

THQ was just trying to see if their new engine would succeed I don’t think they even cared about music at that point.
It’s crazy to think that Diddy Kong Racing, WCW vs nWo, and Goldeneye came out the same year.

I remember all the previews leading into the release of Revenge was that it would have all the wrestlers entrance music so when I got it at launch I was disappointed for a bit but that disappointment fading quickly due to how awesome the game was.WWF lucked out landing that license when they figured everything out and all the bells and whistles were in those games while WCW jumped to EA and those games weren’t good at all.
I remember at that time it seemed like the PS1 was cursed to have terrible wrestling games and I also remember magazines like Gamepro claiming Nitro would be the greatest wrestling ever because it had the nitro arena, the nwo and run-ins their previews were so glowing you thought the game would be great so I bought it on launch and it was a turd.

Smackdown 2's pretty solid for arcade-y fun. Pity about the load times, though.

i didn't watch wrestling at the time and i didn't want to pick some jobber to go up against Hogan and Flair when i played with my friends, so i always picked the Black Ninja to avoid being made fun of. i still got made fun of for always picking the ninja. if i'd known Black Ninja was supposed to be Great Sasuke (and if i knew who Great Sasuke was), i would've smarked them smarky smarks up their smarkin' ass for mocking him!

This topic makes me realize that sequenced (MIDI style) wrestling themes are definitely a lost art. Technically this method could have been used for the AKI games (leaving out licensed songs and certain production themes), but the roster size probably made it unfeasible.
It's interesting to go back and listen to NES, SNES, etc. renditions of themes. Bet they would have sounded pretty awesome with that cheesy growly electric guitar sample that the generic AKI songs used.

I realized that the "fictional" wrestlers were based on real wrestlers when I saw footage from ECW Heatwave 1998. I realized that it was Hannibal and Shaolin on the tables that RVD and Sabu did their leg drops onto. I then read an FAQ online and found out that those wrestlers were just Japanese and Mexican wrestlers but renamed.

It didn't have the video or music like the PS1 games, but to this day it is still one of my favorite wrestling games. Revenge was pretty good because of the improved entrances, graphics and a much larger roster. But for some reason, I always like the original more.

Up until the smackdown series it was real bad the best was Power Move Pro Wrestling while WCW vs the world seemed like the test case for world tour and they jumped ship to the N64 them bastards.

Great game but the revised Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 is much better, with a larger roster, more moves and a simple edit mode. VPW 2, is even better still.
