people.com/movies/hunchback-notre-dame-getting-live-action-remake-disney/The bells of Notre Dame are ringing louder than ever. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is getting a live-action remake, PEOPLE confirms. The film will be produced by Mandeville Films and Frozen‘s Josh Gad. Alan Menken, who created the original score of the animated film, and Stephen Schwartz will compose the music while Tony-winning M. Butterflyplaywright David Henry Hwang is attached to write. While no casting decisions have been made, the remake will pull from the animated film as well as the Victor Hugo novel that was first published in 1831. The animated version of the film was released by Disney in June 1996 and starred Tom Hulce as the voice of Quasimodo, Demi Moore as Esmeralda, Tony Jay as Claude Frollo, Kevin Kline as Phoebus and Jason Alexander as the gargoyle Hugo. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the most recent film to have a live-action in the works. Dumbo, The Lion King, Pinocchio and Mulan have all been announced as remakes, while Cinderella debuted in 2015 and Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book was released in 2016. It was quickly followed by Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson in 2017. Will Smith will portray the Genie in the live-action Aladdin, set to hit theaters in May. Deadline first reported the news.

LET'S CAST THIS THING Josh Gad as Quasimodo (other articles have listed him as starring) Ben Mendelsohn as Frollo (Charles Dance or Peter Capaldi would be fine choices as well, but a bit too old I think) Alexander Skarsgard as Captain Phoebus (Alternatively, Chris Pine) Not sure about Esmerelda. Oona Chaplin or Noomi Rapace are the only Romani actors that immediately came to mind, but I don't see either as quite right for the part. Neither is a big bankable name either, which is something Disney will want. (Of course in the novel I think Esmerelda was kidnapped by Romani as a baby, but I think that brand of blood libel is something Disney will probably avoid.) Going to non-Romani actors Gal Gadot is bankable and obviously looks the part. Zendaya is bankable as well, has Disney ties, but might be a bit young looking (22, but easily passes as a teenager in the Spider-Man movies). If you want to make the Frollo/Esmerelda stuff really skeevy, Zendaya would be the way to go.

A live-action Hunchback of Notre Dame movie? I've never heard of such madness. Surely real actors like Anthony Hopkins or Lon Chaney Sr. would never have anything to do with such a farce.

Oh, the outrage when the deaf lobbies demand Josh Gad either be fired or have his hearing taken from him for not being deaf like Quasimodo is in the original book and I think also the original movie.

Remember when Sora and Riku saved Quasimodo with imaginary stuffed animal friends and had fun?
That's the best version of Hunchback.

I for one will be offended deeply if a real hunchback is not cast in the lead role.

I'll put $ on Megan Fox being cast as Esmerelda. This isn't Michael Bay's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. That doesn't seem like a good bet.

Hopefully they'll ditch the shit like "A Guy Like You" To me, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the darkest film that Disney has ever made, but it usually gets a bad rap because of those friggin gargoyles. Just throws off the balance. Of course, they could have made it where the gargoyles were just his imaginary friends that he made up in order to combat his loneliness, which I would have been perfectly fine with, but when they were shown to actually be alive, it lost me.

Tonally inconsistent is being generous. Hopefully they drop all that sort of shit for this version.
