www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2019/01/18/conan-obrien-revamped-show-shaking-up-like-felt-necessary/2607282002/I know the landscape has changed and I love Conan, but it doesn't seem he's being handled well. A 30 minute show to talk to a guest (additional footage will be on his website) AND do his other stuff? I don't see how he will have much time for it. He said they got rid of stuff they didn't need, so apparently that's the monologue, the band, suits and a desk. I know his tv audience is much bigger online, but this feels kinda cheap. I might like it- Tom Hanks is the first guest

John Oliver has neither and seems to be more successful than guys like Kimmell and Corden. Conan can do anything and it'll usually be great: SNL, Simpsons, interviews, remotes. I'm never worried about the quality with Conan, it is only the reach he has on TBS that is limiting him.

John Oliver has his own niche and the benefit of being both on HBO and only needing to do one show a week, so he operates by entirely different rules than typical late night shows. He's more of an offshoot of the Daily Show mold, except no real guests and more of a deep dive on all sorts of news subjects that might not be covered by typical news outlets. If anything I'd say it's Fallon who's gotten lost in the shuffle, especially in the wake of Colbert's rise a couple of years ago. Colbert, while he does have the band, the guests, and the monologue, also leaned more into political humor than the typical late night host especially during and after the 2016 election. Meanwhile Fallon stayed the course with the more typical "safe" late night show. Political humor is more popular and in-demand in ever, especially in this climate, so Colbert's seen a steady rise while Fallon has faltered. This is also probably why Meyers' Late Night show does better than Corden's in the TV ratings, though Corden's carved out his own niche with online content. And why SNL's followed suit to its own success.
As for Conan, he is a brilliant, hilarious man who can make anything great he sets his mind to. I think TBS has mostly done right by him, especially in the wake in how badly NBC f***ed him over. But there's only so much they can do for him, too.

Gonna crush his enemies, see them driven before him, and hear the lamentations of their women.

I’ve been hearing a lot of Conan lately through his podcast and his appearances on other podcasts, and he’s just a different cat. If it were up to him he’d be doing a show about history or infamous murderers. I really like cutting it down to one guest an episode too. That’s the change I’m most in favor of.
He’s been doing the same format for two and a half decades. I can see why he wants to change things up.

He's more of an offshoot of the Daily Show mold, except no real guests and more of a deep dive on all sorts of news subjects that might not be covered by typical news outlets. Exactly though, if anyone could do [headline]-[set-up]-[punchline] monologue, it would be the show that does one ep per week instead of 5. But it's hard to do, and the quality is normally bad. 99% of late night monologues are garbage and do a better job of wasting time than entertaining audiences. Which is useful when you have to fill 5 hours a week, which is hard (as WWE will tell you.) I like that Conan is trying to think outside the mold. The late night recipe needs to evolve, and it has slightly with stuff like Daily Show, Samantha Bee, even Chelsea Lately, but more in it's launch. No one usually messes with it after the fact, which is where Conan is, as usual, being smart about this. In the end, he'll be less burnt out, the quality of the show will be better, and at least he's open to changing it up.
