I'm going to venture a guess that Spike Lee realizes that. Considering how many times it was used in the "Black Klansman" I hope he does realize it or else he's a hypocrite. The difference is he, as a black artist, has a deeper understanding of that word than Quentin could ever have. There's a stark difference between Spike using it a lot and Quentin using it a lot.

You know how you can admit that a movie is good, it just didn't appeal to you? That's me with A Star is Born

I just realized that this is the third year in a row that a black director nominated for Best Director lost that award, but won one of the screenplay awards to "make up" for it. 89th Academy Awards - Barry Jenkins was nominated for Best Director for Moonlight, lost that, but won Best Adapted Screenplay for Moonlight. 90th Academy Awards - Jordan Peele was nominated for Best Director for Get Out, lost that, but won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out. 91st Academy Awards - Spike Lee was nominated for Best Director for BlacKkKlansman, lost that, but won Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman. That's...kinda messed up, y'all.

I haven't seen it, but Roma looks like the sort of boring, pretentious shite I really despise.

I still watch that at least once a month and it is rare for me to go even a day without listening to one of the songs.

Its an interesting enough story about interesting people. Roma, i dont see the appeal. The life of a housr keeper in Mexico. Yawn. Agreed, loved The Greatest Showman. Excellent movie. Hugh Jackman, surprisingly good singer. Zack Effron has become a really good actor too. Last i saw of him was that comedy he did, Bad Neighbours orsomething.

Crash is still the worst movie to win Best Picture. Damn straight. The message was fine, but they beat the audience over the head with it with a giant 2x4

You know how you can admit that a movie is good, it just didn't appeal to you? Oh no you don't, that's not how the internet works - if a movie doesn't appeal to you, you call it a piece of crap with no redeeming values, and if it happens to be critically acclaimed then you just write that off as standards being lower these days.

Tarantino for Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained, Tom MCarthy for Spotlight, Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Bohemian Rhapsody winning 4 Oscar's when it's basically Walk Hard The Dewey Cox Story without any laughs Walk Hard was a comedy? (I was shocked how much I disliked that movie. Wanted to like it a lot, never seen it since, maybe I was in a funk. I will say the one laugh was David Krumholtz's fate at the end of the movie. That made me laugh a lot.)

Speaking as someone who doesn’t think Green Book is the garbage fire other critics are claiming, I didn’t see anything wrong with this choice. I thought Black Panther was way better and I would have preferred that to win Best Picture, but I liked the chemistry Ali and Mortensen had in that movie. I’m more angry about the fact that Widows wasn’t considered for a nomination, because it’s an awesome heist drama with some strong acting.

Spike Lee was pissed that Green Book won. Him saying, "Every time somebody's driving somebody, I lose!" is funny though. Referencing Do the Right Thing losing to Driving Miss Daisy.
But I hate movies with a "white savior" or a "magical negro." I think it's just insulting.

I haven't seen it, but Roma looks like the sort of boring, pretentious shite I really despise. I liked it but the first half hour is incredibly boring. It's never an action-packed romp obviously but it's a decent film. Watching “Roma” is like going to an art museum and staring at a single painting for nearly three hours. Yes, I see the artistic merit and beauty in it, but after a while it gets kind of tedious. It takes almost 90 minutes for anything of note to happen in “Roma,” and again, while it’s a feast for the eyes and a visual achievement, it’s also perfectly fine to admit that the first 90 or so minutes is just viciously boring. Was “BlacKkKlansman” even in Spike Lee’s top five of all-time movies? If he received an Oscar for that, it would basically be the Academy’s way of giving him a lifetime achievement award, not unlike how Martin Scorsese’s first Oscar for directing was for “The Departed,” which might not be one of his 10 best movies.

It was a good night for directors of 90s comedies and Number Wang contestants.
