I know he had a stint in the 70s, but I'm talking about his 1986-1991 heel run. I dont know how or why he was there so long, and for that matter, even put in high-profile feuds (such as against Warrior, and being a part of the Hogan/Earthquake feud). Nothing against the guy (and his death was a tragedy), but he wasnt all that great in the ring, he didnt exactly have an impressive build, he didnt really generate that much heel heat (at least, not on his own), so why did he last so long? If it was due to the Canadian market, they had the Hart Foundation and the Rougeaus for that.

Solid guy who did his job, could be booked as a threat because of his strength and wouldn't really lose anything from eating pins. You need guys like that too.

Maybe he was working for less than market value because of his crime income

Patterson was always going to be protective of the Montreal boys and keeping Montreal "special."

Patterson was always going to be protective of the Montreal boys and keeping Montreal "special." This, to some degree. Up until Bret really started taking a stable foothold into the main event, Dino was the biggest "local" draw they had in Canada and he still drew fairly decent into his later years with the company. Even former AWA champ Rick Martel didn't have the drawing power in Canada that Dino had.

And Bret, and the Hart family in general, had absolutely no cache in Montreal, at least until the mid-'90s when Bret truly became a national star. Quebec and Alberta may as well be different countries, culturally as well as geographically.

He was a good wrestler with a solid gimmick.
His faction with Jimmy Hart and Quake is still one of my all time favourites.
They wrecked Hogan and Tugboat in 1990.

They still ran tons of house shows in New England, which (pre 9/11) was a short distance from Quebec. I saw him at a B show vs Warrior in 90 and he had tons of heat. Frenchy Martin was there too.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Dino’s Quebec/New England “connections” helped business in those areas.

While I'm sure there were ways they might be able to help out, I don't really see Bravo's buddies being much help at this point in time, when Vince was funding theatrical films and hosting broadcast prime time specials, while Bravo was smuggling cigarettes. Not coke or even pot. Cigarettes.

Especially in a place that taxes it as much as Canada that the people who smuggle Heroin into the US, smuggle ciggies instead into Canada. It's also a great revenue source for middle eastern terrorists.

I never liked Dino Bravo but this was around a standard amount of years for a run in the late 80s and early 90s, so even though he was boring it was quite the regular shelf life

Being in the Pat Patterson French Canadian clique I'm sure helped when it came to his longevity and push. Being a foreigner and having a strong man gimmick worked in his favor too as it made him a natural opponent for both Hogan and Warrior who were the top two faces during his run. Also had a little bit of luck with him getting paired with Earthqukae. Quake was the top heel in 90 so being associated with him kept Bravo prominent and in a good spot on the card despite the fact that he wasn't getting protection booking anymore like he was in 88-89 when it seemed like he rarely ever jobbed.

Plus the First Nations don’t pay tobacco taxes, so they are the people to get your cigarettes from. Though that’s pretty illegal.
