I thought it was like Luger where he wasn't actually *in* the Dungeon of Doom and just affiliated, and that Bret only joined nWo 2000.

He helped Hogan beat Savage for the title in mid 98 I think. Was going to hit Hogan with the belt but hit Nash instead. It was lame and I don’t remember Bret ever wearing an nWo shirt in 98.

I remember the announcers always tripping over themselves to make the distinction. He was just Hogan's little buddy. He never even wore the old school nWo shirt. He wore that weird Hulk Hogan disciple shirt. If I remember correctly, he did not become an official member of nWo until he formed the nWo Silver with Jeff Jarrett. Scott Steiner, and The Outsiders.

That is what I always thought. Under Hogan, he never wore an nWo shirt and was never officially named a member of the group. It wasn't until the reformation of the nWo in 1999 that he was officially in the group.

Piper called out Bret for not being a member of the NWO at one point. Bret pledged his loyalty to Hogan and the NWO then put on a black and white NWO shirt so he was definitely a full member. For that night anyway.

1998 Bret was awesome. Like, he just didn't give a damn about anything.

Didn't he come out to the NWO music during that time?

Bret's heel stuff in 1998 is vastly underrated, but sadly it just wasn't what people wanted to see at the time. There was never any logical reason why he sided with Hogan and the NWO Hollywood group. I don't think even HE understood why he turned, haha. Seriously it was almost meta in that he was railing against his own booking while doing said booking.

He did come out to the nWo music but was more of an ally than an actual member, he would wear the Hollywood Hogan T-shirt but never the nWo T-shirt until the short-lived nWo 2000 faction.

Pre-screwjob Bret, wasn't always happy. He was a grump in the Austin feud, and the Hart Foundation. His heel stuff makes me laugh, at least.
