Dusty is a good example of why you shouldn't be an active wrestler AND the booker at the same time. I can't think of many successful examples of it. You're always going to look out for numero uno, which means you're always going to book yourself at the top. This or you going to end up with a company like TNA.

I wonder how different wrestling history would have played out had promoters been more willing to fight Dusty's worst impulses.

Ron came off as one of the most honest of the interview subjects for the Jim Crockett promotion documentary from a few years ago.

Garvin was so f***ing boring. His feud with Greg Valentine was tedious

Dusty is a lot like Hogan, except he eventually had to get humbled, which didn't happen to Hogan until her was pretty much retired.

I wonder how different wrestling history would have played out had promoters been more willing to fight Dusty's worst impulses. Well most of them did except Crockett. He became Dusty’s bitch, to the point that Jim Crockett bought Dusty a brand new Mercedes. Jim let Rhodes do everything he wanted despite the wrestlers and his own family pleading with him not too. David Crockett hated Dusty for years because he blamed him for killing JCP.

While Dusty didn’t hold a world title for a long time and his run in the WWF wasn’t on top like when he was with the NWA he definitely drew in Florida and the Carolinas. Dusty made plenty of money as a draw in the NWA so Ronnie Garvin sounds bitter if he’s denying that fact. Garvin would’ve been better off knocking his wrestling ability by saying Dusty wasn’t as good as Flair or Windham or Blanchard or Anderson. He’d get a lot more people agreeing with a take like that. Hate the guy all you want but at least tell the truth about him while you’re doing it. Except it's a long-known fact that Dusty did exactly what Ron says he did. Every single hot property that came along - Road Warriors, Magnum TA, Nikita, Luger - Dusty booked himself to be their partner and would make himself the focal point of the angle. Every single time. This is not some new dark secret. He also single-handedly murdered the Florida promotion when he befriended Crockett and started pulling BTS crap like convincing other Florida workers to bail and sign with JCP, all while still a Florida roster member. There's a lot of good about Dusty, but Dusty wasn't a saint and he did some pretty awful stuff business-wise over the years. This is, after all, the guy that fired Baby Doll because she wouldn't sleep with him and got married to Sam Houston instead. When you put it all like that, now I understand why Koloff and Luger never became the top guys, Dusty was there making dragging them down stealing their thunder. What’s sad is that the fat man never changed. He tried to insert himself in the authority angle with his kids. Another time Colt Cabana asked him for advice on his career and it turned into a conversation about how great Cody was.

It's even more convincing that Ricky Morton said the exact same things about Dusty in his shoot. Dusty was still a draw, but others drew more in the Carolinas. Dusty really should have been in the upper midcard at best by the mid 80s, his best years were behind him in the ring. Although he was still a damn good promo.

Crockett bought up too many places in too short of a time span, without the infrastructure McMahon could rely on. That's also not counting the second jet and other ridiculous expenses. I'm sure Dusty talked him into some of it, but the buck is going to always stop on the guy with the purse strings.

David was his brother. You’re right, Jim Crockett got worked and ultimately was responsible for the failure of the company. I believe Jim Ross calles Crockett a deer in the headlights. He reminds me of how Dixie Carter bought stupid expensive gifts for the guys when the company was struggling. That being said, I give Dusty about twenty five percent of the blame for JCP going under. He did everything in his power to diminish Flair and also that all the storylines revolved around Rhodes. David hated Dusty so much that he sabotaged the Shockmaster’s entrance by nailing a board on the ground so Shockmaster would trip and fall. Shockmaster was Dusty’s brother in law.

Jim and Dusty worked each other, and worked each other up into believing they were going to head off to Hollywood and leave wrestling behind. A lot of Crockett's money went into the wheeling-and-dealing the two were trying to do in Cali that ended up going nowhere. Whatever each was selling the other, they were both buying the whole thing. Jim wasn't some naive money mark - he had been running JCP since 1973 and was one of the shrewdest, most powerful promoters around. Remember, this is the same guy that used the first Starrcade and the first SuperClash as opportunities to steal as many of the other promoters' guys as he could. All that said...Crockett buying up Central States, Florida and the UWF was idiotic in every regard. He literally bought nothing but names and a few rings. Hell, he didn't even get the video libraries. Didn't get actual rosters - none of the wrestlers in those places had any obligation to stay once the sales happened.

Yeah, like, I think he also got TV time in some of these places as part of the deals, or at the least, it got him an in on that, but it still quite obviously wasn't worth it to get that and not to have to run opposition in those places. The kind of money he was hoping to get was just not forthcoming.

I think mostly due to his bumbling commentary, David always comes off as the incompetent little brother. But the more I hear about him, I don't think that is the case. Eric Bischoff always speaks well of him and says he was an asset to WCW.

I didn’t know they tried to get into the movies? Flair wrote that Dusty during that time was bullshitting about Sylvester Stallone playing Magnum TA in an autobiographical movie, i always thought that was just Dusty lying but they were trying to get into Hollywood? What the f*** were they thinking?

He apparently was a great guy and a valuable asset to the company, he just hated Dusty’s guts for decades before they worked things out a couple of years before Dusty died.

But yeah, there's an alternate universe out there somewhere in which Dusty Rhodes starred in bad Cannon Films action movies. Everyone always talks about Flair and the Horseman living their gimmick, but the truth was that Dusty and Crockett were living the Horsemen gimmick even more than Flair and Tully were.

Some producer in a meeting with both worked them into giving him millions and then he ran away with the money. I can see him exploiting Dusty’s ego and actually convincing the fool that he was gonna be a leading man in Hollywood. Dusty appeared in Verne Gagne’s bullshit movie that never drew a nickel, did he really think that he would do better? I need to now more about Dusty and Crockett going to Hollywood. I wonder if Dusty’s lies about hanging out with John Belushi and Bette Midler started after the Hollywood failure so Dusty could save face. Do you have more information about both of them going to California?

It's the nature of the business. I don't hear anything being leveled at Dusty that hasn't been leveled at a lot of top talent. For example, Hogan wasn't booking his career and didn't have creative control for most of it. But he gets a lot of the same criticism.

This f***er actually fired Babydoll because she wouldn’t sleep with him.

But other powerful people have been linked to sex and power dynamics in the past. Tommy Rich, Shawn Michaels, and HHH have been accused/suspected of sleeping their way to the top in one way or another. Can you think of anybody who made any kind of moral stand for Babydoll when she was being sexually harassed? It's a dirty business, and anybody who has been on top gets a lot of mud slung at them. Some of it is probably true.
