From what I understand, is it only that they let the copyright expire and someone snatched it up?
Are they only too stubborn to buy this guy out, is he unwilling to sell, or is it more complicated than that?
It just seems so unusual to me that WWE isn't chomping at the bit to write a check for whatever amount it takes to be able to monetize the footage of their A-show from one of their two biggest periods.

- Albert Patterson owns the trademark. He first used it in 1979 and first trademarked it in August 1993.
- His first legal action against WWE was around 30 years ago, plus there were more legal dealings between the two sides around 2006 (when WWE started censoring the name). He was the reason for the 1992 name change to just WWF Superstars.
- He still sends letters to WWE, as he seems to not understand that WWE is allowed to use the word "Superstars" for phrases like "WWE Superstars" or "Smackdown Superstars." In one letter he read on a Facebook video, WWE indicated that they have made him no financial offers and don't intend to do so.
- WWE Network News reported last month when the 1992 episodes were put on the Network that WWE is basically just going to play the waiting game and go after the trademark if Patterson passes away or lets it lapse.

Yeah, this is one of those situations where WWE's just going to let him die first and not even attempt negotiations with him.

Patterson was a wrestling promoter dating back to the '70s, based in Wisconsin and one of the earliest African-Americans to be doing so. Had used the phrase "Superstars of Wrestling" in his promotional work often, just like many companies did, but when WWF let their official trademark on the phrase lapse in '93, Patterson snagged it.

Considering Vince has apparently dreamt of the Network since the 80’s, odd he’d let that lapse. I guess I know why but still.

It had to be one of those completely blind oversights, due to everything else going down at the time.

WWE let it lapse because they stopped using the full name in 1992 due to Patterson. casetext.com/case/patterson-v-world-wrestling-entertainmentAccording to this, WWE has been dealing with Patterson since 1989. Apparently, the 2006 legal action from Patterson is what led to WWE censoring the name. There are WWE DVDs from before that, including the 2005 Ultimate Warrior set, where the full "Superstars of Wrestling" name is used.

I wonder if this has anything to with WWE's aversion to the world "wrestling" in general?

I wonder if this has anything to with WWE's aversion to the world "wrestling" in general? Not at all. WWE only changed the name of the show in April 1992 because of Patterson, and he has been sending them letters and/or taking them to court since 1989. They probably are just sick of the guy to the point they won't entertain the idea of paying him anything.

Has Albert Patterson continued to actively use this trademark? It is true that he still owns the trademark, but if he hasn't been using it, I don't see how he can claim continued use.

True, and further emphasizing this point is watching these 1992 episodes and (rather surprisingly) hearing Vince refer to "Wrestling" and "Wrestlers" quite a bit.

So we won’t be getting the late 80s/early 90s Superstars any time soon. It makes me sad but to make up for it, put Wrestling Challenge on the f***ing network instead!

I think it's hilarious he keeps sending letters and they won't pay. I am sure when it comes up again or he passes they will snatch it up like others have said.
