Cares, Völur, Muffler Crunch, Jack Moves, Greber
Date: Friday February 15th, 2019
Venue: Coalition in Toronto, Ontario
Jack Moves was up first and he was odd, to say the least. I guess his style could be called “uplifting synth pop” but not 1980’s synth pop. His backing music was really good and at times his vocals were really good but his set kinda dragged for me. He did a cool cover of Bark at the Moon but overall he was too uplifting. If I wanted to be that uplifted I’d double up on my meds.
Greber were more up my alley. They were a sludgy hardcore band and I swear I’ve seen them before.
Muffler Crunch took way too long to get set up and the venue cut their set to three songs. They played four though because it seemed like most of the people there were there to see them. They were interesting. When they guy sung and they were heavy they were cool because they sounded like the Melvins. The girl had a good voice but it really wasn’t my thing. The guitarist reminded me of one of the Jimmy clones in Hardcore Henry (Sharlto Copley’s character). I can’t form a full opinion on them because they were rushed tonight but they seemed goodish.
I’ve seen Völur a few times now and some nights they’re good while other nights they’re not. Tonight they were good. They incorporated some keyboards into their new song and that added a lot to their sound.
Cares was really awesome, even with the freestyle jazz drums that came in midway through his set. It was noise music but not as abrasive as noise music usually is. He only played for fifteen minutes but he ended the show on an extremely high note.
