It just hit me on how strange tape-delays are when a title change has taken place, I guess... I've just never thought of this before, but in the instance of tonight's episode of NXT, which was actually taped three weeks ago and featured Velveteen Dream defeating Johnny Gargano for the NXT North American Championship.
The Dream has already been champion for three weeks before the title change was broadcasted, but during that time on the house show circuit Gargano defended that title and even sported it on Raw and Smackdown, obviously back in the eighties and nighties stuff like that was common practice as shows in the WWF and WCW were often taped days, weeks and sometimes months in advance, but it just dawned on me how weird of a situation that is.
The interesting part with the NXT product and situations like this is, most people the attend NXT are smart to the product and are aware of tape delays, spoilers and the like so there's the factor of occasionally seeing a wrestling defend a title that's not there's as well that's probably a be strange for the fans.

Apparently, they taped an alternate finish with Johnny retaining and confronting Ciampa on the stage.

They taped the ending both ways, so I'd pretty much bet money that they never intended for Dream to be champion and this is just an awkward situation they've been forced into by this stupid call-up thing.

I dunno, they had an interview with him post-win so I think they weren't not planning it. I mean, they haven't rushed into Ciampa losing the belt yet.

Wasn’t there a story in Foley’s first book about how he went to a Worldwide taping in Orlando(where they taped a couple months of show in one shot) and some other team was cutting a promo about how they beat Cactus and his partner for the titles.....and Cactus’s team hadn’t even won them yet,

They had the live Halftime Heat after Dream's win was taped. The other finish was likely done so Gargano would have a reason to still be recognized as the champion until his loss aired. WWE did stuff like this years ago. Warrior was going to win the IC Championship at SummerSlam, so at pre-SummerSlam TV tapings that wouldn't air until after the event, he would get the belt from Honky Tonk Man at the start of the night and would come to the ring for his squash matches wearing it and being announced as champion. After they got that footage taped, they'd announce to the crowd that Jack Tunney was returning the title to HTM on a technicality.

Lol nothing will top the Freebirds's second reign with the WCW Tag Team Championships:
They were booked to win the belts at a live PPV and then to lose them shortly thereafter on one of WCW's weekly TV shows. A weekly TV show that was pre-taped. And they lost those titles on an episode that was pre-taped 6 days before the live PPV where they won them! So in kayfabe/TV world, that Freebirds title reign lasted 13 days. However technically/officially, it lasted -6 days.

There was also a similar situation in 1995 where Harlem Heat beat the Nasty Boys for the titles even though when the match was taped (nearly 2 months before it aired), HH were the defending champions and the NBs were the challengers. Bunkhouse Buck and Dick Slater also won the titles by beating HH despite the fact that when the match was taped several weeks earlier, the NBs were the champions.

I mean, we just came off Rhea Ripley having the longest reign of a first time champion without actually being crowned champion on TV.

On the subject of Rhea Ripley... she’s got to be done with NXT UK, right? She lost pretty cleanly to Toni Storm and she’s been working house shows for NXT Orlando, so that means she’s on to bigger things?

That one is a myth. www.thehistoryofwwe.com/worldwide93.htmWCW had their first Disney-MGM Worldwide tapings in July, then the next ones were in November after Sid had been fired. The July taping footage finished airing on Nov. 20, and the Nov. taping footage began to appear on TV on Nov. 27. Sid's planned title win would have happened on Dec. 27 at Starrcade.

Did they tape two finishes in that taping? I have been aware that Johnny was dropping the belt to Dream and even mentioned it in a thread about the callups, but I don’t remember noticing an alternate finish being taped.

After the match, they got into a brawl that ended with Gargano making Dream submit. Gargano then left with the belt.
