It's astonishing how games like this are still being unearthed 30 years after they've been made. This actually does seem VERY similar to the WCW NES game, especially in the fact that all the wrestlers wear the same type of tights pants, just in different colors.
Also, for those wondering, I think the roster selection screen goes like this:
Road Warrior Animal -- Road Warrior Hawk -- Sting -- Jimmy Garvin Bobby Eaton -- Lex Luger -- Ric Flair -- Barry Windham

So glad to hear it's getting dumped and preserved. Those EPROM chips on prototype cartridges are notorious for becoming unreadable.

I like seeing Eaton and Hawk just throwing high kicks over and over.

Universal Wrestling Corporation was the place holder name Turner had for it before deciding to go with the much better WCW.
And oddly enough, that's Lane and not Lex in the game. How does a solo Garvin make the cut but no Lex??

The ref looks like Tony Schiavone.

The roster makes me feel that this prototype was developed in mid-late 1988. By then, Garvin was singles again, aside from teaming with Ronnie from time to time. He did have a sizable midcard push at the time (so oddly, no Rotunda so you can have JG vs. Varsity Club represented?) Strange, as Sting and Garvin aside, the rest of the lineup is just tag teams...if you can count Flair and Windham as one too. I appreciate that this is the only official time you can play as the Midnight Express though. I feel like the WCW that DID come out was developed, maybe early 1989. Eddie was Rick's partner around that time, and Scott was only starting to make appearances. Hayes was a singles act at the time (Terry Gordy would be coming in soon, and Garvin returned later as a Freebird)

This is an amazing find.
I love the frozen-in-abject-horror faces in the crowd.

How does a solo Garvin make the cut but no Lex?? If production on this started when I think it did, Jimmy was enjoying a very brief peak coming off a wildly popular face turn that saw him getting world title matches, while rookie Luger was still bogged down in the higher midcard, dealing with the other Horsemen, not Flair.

It makes me kind of sad to learn the Midnights almost-but-not-quite made it into a video game, considering how important they are to the history of tag team wrestling.
They weren't included in any of the Legends of Wrestling games, were they?

That really wasn’t odd at all. In early 89 Michael Hayes was in a singles run where he ended up winning the US title from Lex Luger. Eddie Gilbert and Rick Steiner were the WCW US tag team champions at the time. The Steiners and the Freebirds wouldn’t come along until later in the year.

I think it's still weird to me though because the roster encapsulates a window of time where many of them were in atypical roles. Steiner isn't with the Varsity Club or his brother, and Hayes is actually in a pretty forgettable singles run between Freebirds versions.
