It makes me kind of sad to learn the Midnights almost-but-not-quite made it into a video game, considering how important they are to the history of tag team wrestling. They weren't included in any of the Legends of Wrestling games, were they? No, they were not. I never understood why. They were one of the most important teams in wrestling history.

They either couldn't come to an agreement with Acclaim, or they were never contacted in the first place.

That really wasn’t odd at all. In early 89 Michael Hayes was in a singles run where he ended up winning the US title from Lex Luger. Eddie Gilbert and Rick Steiner were the WCW US tag team champions at the time. The Steiners and the Freebirds wouldn’t come along until later in the year. That's true. I forgot about Hayes singles run and the short-lived Steiner/Gilbert feud with Varsity Club. I think it's still weird to me though because the roster encapsulates a window of time where many of them were in atypical roles. Steiner isn't with the Varsity Club or his brother, and Hayes is actually in a pretty forgettable singles run between Freebirds versions. I got the impression that they wanted to get all the champions from that time in the game. Sting was the TV champion having won the belt from Mike Rotunda who had swapped it with Rick Steiner before that. Gilbert and Steiner were the US tag champions. Hayes traded the US title with Luger during that time. The Road Warriors lost the world tag titles to Mike Rotunda and Steve Williams around that time too. Flair and Steamboat were also having their classic trilogy exchanging the world title. All of those guys are in the game. It’s a game that basically happens somewhere around Chi-Town Rumble to Wrestle War 89. If they would’ve waited a few months we might have gotten the Steiners, the Freebirds, the Skyscrapers and maybe even Terry Funk. The NWA in 1989 was some of my favorite stuff so I was just happy to have the game. It wasn’t better in terms of gameplay than Nintendo’s Pro Wrestling but they had double the amount of characters wrestling games had at the time. Plus they were established names so that made it fun too.
