One of the great stars of the 1950s through the 1970s, he was a major star in the US, Canada, and Japan. Some of his biggest matches included a mask vs. hair match with Gorgeous George and a match with Rikidozan in Japan, which was seen by one of the biggest audiences in history. He was 88.

Aww, damn. Great heel.
Another "should have been in the HOF years ago" name too.

He was way before my time but I was always fascinated by his career. I got to meet him once. He and his wife were very nice. RIP Dick Beyer.

Before my time but picked up a bunch of 70s All Japan shows and he's in a lot of them. Great wrestler, a lot quicker than I was expecting 70s wrestling to be.
He appeared at that tsunami relief benefit show in 2012 (the first of the two), awarding the winner of the Battle Royale a trophy and a mask.
Rest in peace, sir.

Bummer. He became a swim coach for a school district outside of Buffalo and used to swim against him team a few times a year. Seemed like a great guy. His swim team had an inflatable shark they would throw in the pool. A guy on our team jumped on it. Our coach became furious. The Destroyer walked over to the guy that did it, shook his hand and was laughing. Said no one ever had the balls to do that before

Weird he never looked old because he stayed in great shape. The original gaijin star, I think he could rival Stan Hansen in influence and popularity over there.

His commentary of a match he had with a bear was hilarious. He was explaining why the bear couldn’t be pinned.

If you've ever seen a picture of Blondie's Debbie Harry wearing a T-shirt with a masked wrestler on it, that was Dick, in his Dr. X persona.

Jim Cornette was talking about Dick Beyer a few months ago about how he learned the importance of being friendly with the police that work the matches when you were a heel.

I live in Japan, his passing was number one trend on Jpn Twitter for much of the day, it was the lead story on their MSN page and it made the front page of at least one of the afternoon editions of a tabloid here.

Long, full life. Can't ask for much better. Agreed. I mean, it's always a sad thing for someone's friends and family when they pass, but is it weird that I always smile a bit when I read about the guys who died of old age with their health and families still intact?
