All that money left on the table. Stupidly irresponsible booking.
He also made Roman look like an absolute goof when they did the torch passing feud.

How would Heel Turn John Cena act though? The usual 'I now hate the fans that hated me all this time' anger? Somehow I don't think he could quite pull that off, as charismatic as he is.

You just take the "gatekeeper" thing he was doing briefly before he stopped being full time and have him lay into guys way more. "No one measures up to me, I'm not leaving until someone does and I'll destroy anyone who tries and fails."

There's so many ways to take his character in a heel direction; something in the vein of Hollywood Rock or '97 Bret Hart, for instance. So many possibilities, and Cena could pull them all off.

Too late now. Besides, he clearly doesn't want to turn heel, so no point doing it.

We're about 10 years too late for this conversation, any "money left on the table" has long since gone. There's no money turning him heel now, when he's primed to be the new Undertaker-type Legend that comes around every once in a while to give the rub to the up-and-comers. Sure, they could potentially portray him as a 'you're not as good as I am' kind of tweener, but the time for him to get universal hatred from the crowd is not going to happen.

Cena has become such an afterthought, in a strangely low key fashion. I barely even think of him any more, and it seems like he's happy to drift away quietly. I don't mind him not turning heel, because I just don't think he will be around enough to make a storyline like that worthwhile.
That weird, throwaway 'match' against Undertaker at Wrestlemania last year really seems to sum up his level of investment in the WWE now. He's moved on from wrestling, but just hasn't quite cut the cord yet.

At this point why bother? We're years past when it would have any real significance.

At this point, he should just be John Cena.

He graduated out of carnyland, he doesn't owe them anything. Especially if their next big idea for Cena really was to put over that Nazi hoss.

Cena should brutally assault people while playing up his “hero to the kids” persona.
Basically, change nothing about his character except the fact that he now assaults people in protection of his spot.
Paranoid delusional Cena is the way to go.

I’d do it more like Bret Hart: “I’ve always been a good guy, it’s you people who have lost your morals and would rather cheer scum like this” (in allusion to a popular face antihero).

Good. I'm glad he never turned heel after he became the top guy. It makes him seem more like a hero and role model for standing by his convictions. He was always popular with women and children so abandoning them just to please his critics made no sense. Instead Cena would win the respect, if not the love of his critics the right way through his dedication and work ethic.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to top guys having heel turns. I felt Roman needed it years ago (not now though). But I feel it was never necessary for Cena.

It's too late. Way too late. He's reached that point where fans are going to cheer him no matter what because he's legendary. Or boo him in good fun a la Angle's "you suck" chant.
The last really good time to do it was in 2011 before Triple H doused CM Punk in ice water.

Remember not to long ago we had periodical threads on whether Cena should turn heel? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
I agree that is almost impossible for Cena to turn heel unless he gets caught being a racist or homophobe in real life. Even then, it is no guarantee, as we have seen with Hulk Hogan's last appearance.

Cena turning heel would actually be something surprising WEE could do. They won’t and to be fair probably shouldn’t at this point either.
