While both of these guys have been criticized for their commentary, which one would you say was "better"? I'd say Piper, his commentary at Summerslam 91 alone is excellent, paticularly during Bret/Perfect and Virgil/Dibiase, and he and Heenan's verbal battles from that show was also fun. I also liked his quasi-heel act at Summerslam 90. That said, he wasnt that great during the syndie shows since a lot of the time he was working with fellow babyfaces who pretty much parroted what he had to say. However, Savage just seemed bored throughout his commentary run, sometimes just repeating lines (not to mention that one RAW where he kept randomly yelling GOAL!)

I enjoyed both of them, honestly. I have fond memories of Superstars in 1991. Savage's later stuff, during those "you're too old to be a full time wrestler much less title contender" days, was probably worse, but again I was a fan of him on the mic generally and don't have much ill will toward that at all.
Those were my happy days with wrestling so it's tough to see stuff I hate from like 1988-1993. 94 was when the problems began, I fear rewatching that year now would be very rough; and really when Savage left was when it really got truly lousy for me. (Enter: more regular WCW viewing...)
Anyway, in his first few months Savage was definitely more of a heel announcer, countering Vince and Piper, and that seemed to be better usage for him. But that went away with Summerslam '91 when he had to 'face it up.'

Savage all day!
Piper's commentary was plain silly and his ramblings sounded like some author's children book or nursery rhymes they may have written while on drugs. He took away from the matches, the storylines and the wrestlers and I think his commentary hurt the legend he had been during his 1984-1987 run (to me, at least).
He took away from the matches while I think Macho Man's fascinating with even the little details put the attention on the matches, wrestlers, storylines. For as good as he was during his time, his commentary towards other wrestlers made them seem that much better since he had already been a legend. I'm sure he still had a way to go as a wrestler but he had been in commentary for years to come with WWF I would have been fine with that. I enjoyed him.

I think Savage was better. Have you heard his 1995 WCW work? Look up the Marcus Bagwell vs Brian Pillman match, he does a stellar job making a "Main Event" pre-Pay-Per-View match sound like an all time classic.

Piper no contest, his work on GCW and Mid Atlantic is top notch.

I think Piper enjoyed being the heel or tweener more than face so his earlier commentary or promo days were much better. I'm not claiming racism but 1980s Piper wouldn't have had to resort to such silliness as the half black skin at WrestleMania VI.
He was still a very big name in wrestling so I get that WWF needed a big name on commentary for a few of the PPVs in 1990 and 1991 after Jesse left but I just didn't care for his commentary. He did get along well with Gorilla which I liked. I would have rather had Lord Alfred Hayes or Sean Mooney on commentary for 1990, early 1991 shows and then just Gorilla and Bobby for Summerslam 1991.

Give me Piper and quite a few people worse than Piper (Lord Alfred, Hillbilly Jim, Jim Duggan, Luscious Johnny V) before making me sit through Savage.
I'll take Savage over Superstar Billy Graham, though.

Wtf... Lord Alfred was an amazing color man.
For me it's Piper. I hated him as a wrestler post-'87, but thought he was a serviceable replacement for Jesse Ventura, being the commentator who wasn't afraid to call it the way he saw it rather than playing a binary face/heel character. I still remember him making fun of the Warrior on Superstars for "prancing like a pony" and could almost hear Vince gritting his teeth.
Savage was off and on for me. He had moments where he was really good and others where he was cringe.

Seriously guys, look up some old episodes of GCW, you see Piper in a new light there.

Vince was quick to cover it but I didn't think Vince wanted him to remind the fans that who he was.

I don't remember who was in that match you're talking about with Savage yelling GOAL but I know 100% that I watched that match in the past year. I legit thought Savage was like high on coke or something.

Even as young as I was back then, so like 8, any team besides Gorilla and Heenan was 2nd place. I guess if I had to choose, I'd go with Piper because he had jokes. Really, if I boiled it down, all I care about is jokes. In anything. At any moment. If you think that's not really true, I got a laugh picking out an urn for my mother less than 24 hours after she died.

I thought he did the same thing during the 91 Royal Rumble.

Piper made fun of Simba's big rear end at the '91 Rumble but didn't say anything about it being Atlas.

Are we only talking WWF here? Because Piper was fantastic on commentary in Georgia.

I honestly think I liked Mr. Perfect and Dibiase better than both. Definitely think Punk was better. Savage is one of my favorite of all times, but he may have been the most face bias commentator I have ever heard during his WWF commentating Times.

I’d have to go with Savage as sometimes Piper could be too much. His voice could just jar at times, especially if he wasn’t really saying anything.
