Did they? Didn’t Ronda go into some rant about desecrating the church of the wrestling ring? That was all kinds of scripted WWE speak

As good as Orton’s promo was, it was still littered with “performer, sports entertainer” shit. Stamp THAT out and you’re getting somewhere.

He was dismissive of AJ's skills but it was by playing the non-WWE places he's mostly made his name in as second-rate, not by insinuating that his talents are phony in some way.

Apart from referencing other companies, I don’t like when they hint at scripts/real names/pushes/etc. It’s phony and takes me out of it.
There’s literally a million compelling stories they could write. Talking about how it’s fake and shit is lazy.

I saw the YouTube clip of the Orton/Styles exchange; seeing Orton actually bring some passion to the proceedings was surprising, and him drawing on his past of looking down on the indies and integrating the dynamic of "cradle-to-grave WWE guy vs. indy and outsider talent" for their match is a smart way of integrating real life into a kayfabe story. If that's what they're talking about, then it's a positive step forward; nothing was called "fake", they didn't resort to using real names, they just drew on things that fans would be familiar with and used them to inform the present interactions between the characters.
The next step is to lay out their Mania match so that this conflict is reflected in how they approach going at one another. Do that, and it becomes a very successful program and not just an individually solid promo segment.

Orton's a WWE lifer, of course he's going to use the buzzwords. Even with Fox wanting a more "serious" presentation come September, WWE's still not going to pretend it's a legit "sport" the way that NJPW might.

I didn’t mean that, I meant he was still using the shoe-horned in buzzwords and phrases that no actual human on earth uses, so it took me out of it a little.

I hate it. I'm imagining this approach in other scripted television series.
Walking Dead
Rick: "Let's cut the bullshit for a minute, Negan... or should I call you Jeff? Nobody even knew your name before you were cast on MY SHOW."
Negan: "While you're <fingerquotes> cutting the bullshit </fingerquotes> Rick... Andrew... whatever, why don't you stop trying to carry off that phony Dixieland accent? Everybody in the audience knows that I'm the real badass zombie slayer, so why don't you surrender to the Saviors and I'll make sure you get a cup of tea to sip with pinky extended."
Rick: "Negan, I'm going to bash your skull in with that television prop you call Lucille."

So yeah, this is very reminiscent of 'Vince got the roster together and told them to be more realistic, less cartoony'. And without any other context, that sounds like a fantastic idea. Let wrestlers get themselves over, and go with what's working, instead of telling them 'you're this guy. You say this. Exactly this!'
But does anyone trust Vince and co to not start interfering whenever someone presents something that 'isn't the sort of real we want, pal'? The shoot stuff is lame, because it's taking the reality idea too far, and asking people to understand that these guys are just performers, following a script. And even though most fans know that and appreciate the way the business works, they still don't want the fourth wall broken so blatantly.
Becky has been fine with her promo stuff. She keeps it kayfabe (even keeps it kayfabe a lot of the time in interviews) and uses real emotion to inform her character. So while her frustrations at how things were going in 2017 and early 2018 are very real, no one truly thinks that she blames Charlotte for that. Ronda seems to have grasped as far as 'if you're pissed off, use that in your promos' and not understood that it's the emotion you use, rather than the exact nature of your grievance.

Giving the talent more freedom but then doing more “reality” based stuff that exposes the business rather than giving the talent a character + story that they can sink their teeth into seems pointless. If the only two promo styles are either “overly scripted/not sounding like real people” or “Vince Russo on drugs”, then I don’t see any real positive.

I don’t mind them switching things up now and then, bringing real life stuff into promos etc BUT there is a huge problem when they let someone basically come out and say it’s all fake/scripted. Like how can that possibly be a good thing at all? You gotta tred carefully with this sort of thing and I don’t think someone like Ronda is smart enough to do that. Even if we are being worked here it’s dumb. I wanted The Man to respond that Ronda couldn't handle pressure, couldn't handle losing, tucked her tail and ran from UFC. Who's the fake one now, Ronnie?

Jose (x2) attacking his conga line extra's then cut a promo about being sick of this gimmick would be kind of awesome

Bringing reality into promos is great as long as it’s done right. The right way: Have the wrestlers draw from their actual experiences and cut promos that come across as from the heart. These promos will then hopefully come across as authentic enough that it makes viewers question how much of this is a shoot and how much of it is kayfabe. The Vince Russo way: Have the wrestlers cut promos where they tell the viewers that the rest of the show is fake and that this promo is real. This undercuts all of the drama and stakes that the rest of the show is trying to achieve, while also contributing virtually nothing to whatever program you’re in. I came here to write this. Bingo.

I will add that the Orton/Styles promo made me genuinely excited for what comes next and for their Mania match. That is what good wrestling promos are all about.

So long as we get more like the Kofi, Orton, and AJ stuff and less like Ronda's stupid Twitter shit, I'm fine with this. And a couple weeks later we can safely say they learned COMPLETELY the wrong lesson from this.
