Watching some 1986 /87 WWF television and taking a back how they turn Danny Davis. Watching the Danny Davis refereed matches and interviews, he is obviously a heel, it is over the top and bladent. In comparison to Nick Patrick, at least early on there is some shutlty at first, as it went one it became more obvious, but is was a slow build from referee making some quetionable calls to out right heel referee, while Davis was all of a sudden heel referee, with no real build.
Anyone know why those turns were handled differently, was just a product of different times? With Patrick they provided a reasonable doubt why he wasn't fired right away and that his boss was revealed to be part of the nWo, while what is Tunney excuse for continuing to allow Davis to referee?

David got banned and ended up being a wrestler. It started with Tito, but that could have been a normal ref sucks. It was the buildup of the hart Foundation title win where it became blatant.

Was just a difference in the times.
Davis was a heel because he was just a douche who liked screwing people over for the hell of it.
Patrick was a straight official who was seduced to the dark side by the nWo.

A big part of Davis going heel was just the outrage factor: the WWF audience had never seen a rogue ref before, and it was maddening to watch him becoming more and more pro-heel (and cocky about it) without getting punished. He did an insincere apology at one point with Tunney standing there like a fool: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTwTXU6A_vwWith Nick Patrick, we were into the "is he or isn't he?" drama period of wrestling, with fans conditioned to try to sniff out heel turns and swerves and betrayals before they happened, so it made more sense that his corruption wasn't so obvious.

I always thought that the Danny Davis heel turn was quite subtle, as if there were questions about him before they became blindingly obvious. I do seem to recall him punching another referee (Joey Marbella?) before a big match, so that he could officiate it.
His heel referee act must have worked, though; the crowd at WM3 was on fire when the Bulldogs and Tito were getting revenge on him.
