(Besides the Fire Pro game series.) It seems like the NES/SNES/Genesis weren't full of wrestling games that too many people like, especially in retrospect. I for one loved and still love the 16-bit WWF games that made up Super WrestleMania/Royal Rumble/Raw/Rage In The Cage. But I guess eventually that needed to hit the wayside once gaming in general went to 3D games and WWF needed to do that (the two MK-style games from '95 and '96 were a nice filler to tide us over, I felt). So they went as far as they could go with that particular engine, though it's too bad they couldn't do essentially a Rage In The Cage 2 for a CD console like the Sega CD or Saturn (not the PSX because Sony wanted as few 2D games on that console as possible) with even more characters and, you know, more than 2 match types.

Well since Fire Pro is off the table, this becomes pretty obvious that Saturday Night Slam Masters is the gold standard.
As much as a kid I did love playing all the NES and SNES/Genesis offerings, they tried and failed to capture the essence of pro wrestling.
Slam Masters said f*** it, lets make a fighting game with pro wrestling as the aesthetic. It just worked.

I had Natsume Championship Wrestling for the SNES that I really liked a lot. It felt like a mix between the AKI games and Fire Pro, had timing based grappled but felt a bit weightier like No Mercy. Didn't have a very big roster or have much move variety though.

WWF Superstars and Wrestlefest were arcade godsends back on the day, and its a shame no console game ever really tried to emulate them that much.

Royal Rumble and Raw aren’t brilliant, but they’re a lot of nostalgic fun. Couldn’t tell you how many times I rented Royal Rumble as a kid, own it now. It wasn’t til years later I found out the Mega Drive version had a slightly different roster

For some reason, I kind of enjoyed Mat Mania.

For some reason, I kind of enjoyed Mat Mania. Was this the one also known as Exciting Hour with Insane Worrier and Coco Savage? If so I played that game a lot in my local arcade circa 1988. Coco Savage was a pain in the arse to try and beat, and he wasn’t even the champion!

I personally loved both WWF Wrestlemania (1995) and WWF In Your House (1996) for PC.

If we’re counting arcade games, Wrestlefest.

I put in many hours on TECMO World Wrestling for NES and WWF Royal Rumble for SNES. Those are my picks as well. I also have to give some love to the original Pro Wrestling on NES.
