The Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal thread got me to remember these. I remember on the DVDs of Wrestlemania 21 and 22 that a pre-show battle royal was featured as an extra. While they were okay to get the crowd into it before the show officially started, were these only done to get the rest of the roster on the card somehow? I mean Wrestlemania XX had two fatal 4-way tag matches on the card for the tag titles, which looking back felt like they tried to get others on the card, same with the cruiserweight gauntlet match.
I didn't mind these battle royals, by the way. Though I wondered why they didn't have one at 23.

I think they figured the lumberjacks for the tag match with Flair and Carlito would work as an equivalent.

What I find fascinating was that it wasn't until WrestleMania 21 that they decided to try and put everyone on the roster in the show as an experiment, or at the very least, throw a few people a bone. WrestleMania XX did not have a dark match, for one, and they played up the tag team matches as if it was the last chance for much of the roster to get a spot on the card.
That battle royal at 21 will always highlight Booker T's history at the Showcase of the Immortals, considering it was his only singles victory. The one at 22 is even stranger, where it ended up coming down to two RAW wrestlers, and two heels at that, with Viscera getting his second (or third, considering that the tag team reign he had was technically a mistake) biggest moment of his wrestling career.
