Kind of an odd moment of realization I just had on all this Ronda / Becky / Charlotte drama that's done a lot to drag this feud down for people (even if by now the course has kind of been corrected from this week's hilarity) - WWE making the road to Mania for the Rumble winner needlessly complicated is actually something they have a pretty solid track record of doing lately. This is actually the sixth time in a row.
29 - Cena defended his shot against CM Punk. 30 - Batista didn't have to defend his shot, but did have to contend with having someone else added to the match through basically no fault of his own. 31 - Reigns defended his shot against Daniel Bryan. 32 - N/A, Rumble wasn't for a title shot. 33 - Where do I even start with all the hoops Orton had to jump through? 34 - Asuka defended her shot against Nia Jax.
That's a trend WWE probably should knock off... but since the Rumble and Mania have two PPVs between them again next year they probably won't.

I think it's probably because there's so much TV between the Rumble and Wrestlemania, and WWE's brain trust can't figure out how to tell a story to fit that timescale without it being dumb and overly convoluted.
They'd be better off saying, 'the winner gets a title shot and a month off! Congratulations on your vacation!'

I don’t understand what’s so hard about keeping the Rumble winner and the champ away from each other for a month. All they have to do is book them in a filler feud for a few weeks, nobody would mind.

Will the WWE be able to knock off the trend? We'll find out, as Raw rolls on!

WWE can’t book the three weeks between PPVs when they try to book three months they need to throw so much crap around just to fill TV time.
It is great that someone’s supposed to get their automatic title shot at Mania and then usually need to spend the next three months justifying their win

As it stands you may as well not bother winning the Rumble at all. Save your energy and just call the winner a shithead the next night or something. Instantly puts you in title contention without getting needlessly sweaty.

Did Orton really get screwed though? I feel like he did all that to himself because... he wanted to mess with Bray?

Even after all those hoops it’s still for nothing, as the percentage of Rumble winners going to Mania and winning the championship is so low it’s not even included in the Rumble numbers videos anymore.

I don’t understand what’s so hard about keeping the Rumble winner and the champ away from each other for a month. All they have to do is book them in a filler feud for a few weeks, nobody would mind. Austin's filler feud heading into Mania X7 was one of the greatest matches he ever had. Like, it's really not that difficult. And it'd be so easy just to book the main event Mania heel screwing the babyface during their match at the February show. I mean shit, if the face is the champion, have the heel do something that actually makes sense for once and screw the OTHER heel so that the face keeps the title and their Mania match is still for the belt.

This. And the weird part is, it wasn’t that long ago that they did exactly this for an ENTIRE YEAR with The Rock vs. Cena. Cena had his own feuds during all that time, while the company did an effective job of selling that Cena’s ultimate goal was to beat The Rock at WrestleMania 28. So what’s the problem with doing that for just a month?

It's not exactly a new thing either.
Shawn Michaels had to defend his Rumble win in 1996 against Owen Hart.

Even for wrestling, them acting like AJ and Harper both hit the floor at the same time was really f***ing dumb.
