I remember reading stuff about this. What exactly did this mean? I mean was he just going to get rid of the ring so that matches can take place on the floor? Was the floor going to be a padded mat? What was the deal?

I don't know that quote specifically, but Russo has said he preferred the skits and interviews over the actual wrestling so I suppose a show focused on that with no wrestling.

It was in reference to the video game Backstage Assault. It had no ring. The game was heavily panned and was regarded as the worst wrestling game put out.

Russo had plans to do much less wrestling both in WCW and WWE. One time in 1998, in the column he wrote for WWE's magazine under the name "The Informer," he said, "I can't imagine an episode of Raw with no matches. Then, again, maybe I can."

WCW was a subsidiary of a huge media conglomerate and more of a television property than an autonomous company, so when it ceased operations it was more like a network cancelling a TV show than a business being forced to close its doors. The truth is that if the network hadn't decided to expunge itself of wrestling programming, WCW would have never been in any true danger of ceasing operations. I think it would be fair to say that Russo damaged WCW by digging the hole they were in even deeper than it already was, but if AOL Time Warner had been invested in keeping WCW on its networks, it would still be around today in some capacity. I remember Russo's "getting rid of the ring" comment back in the 90's when I was praying for Russo's death, and it was clear that he had no respect for the wrestling business or wrestling fans and only saw WCW as a canvass to express his shitty art. f*** that guy straight to hell. |

Lance Storm claims that Russo once yelled that he wanted to replace all the wrestlers with actors.
Remember that awful sitcom from the mid nineties about wrestling called Nikki? I think Russo wanted to do that shit.
