Did anyone who worked on that WCW Backstage game ever say why they went with that design choice of no ring?

Hearing the STWW episode about Russo and some Kevin Sullivan shoots, Russo was a fan of the wwwf but only the promos and vignettes, whenever a match started he would change the channel.
That explains his booking and what he would want in a show, nothing but promos and backstage skits.

We already saw what would happen, and what happened was sending WCW on the way to gong out of business. Yeah, but he was still accountable to Turner I want to see what kind of craziness he would come up with without any oversight. lol Ring of Glory?

I would say it’s bullshit but then again we got the backstage assault game. Lance Storm claims that Russo once yelled that he wanted to replace all the wrestlers with actors. Remember that awful sitcom from the mid nineties about wrestling called Nikki? I think Russo wanted to do that shit. Damn I saw that once in Channel 4 in the UK about 20 years ago and forgot about it right after. Thanks for reminding me of Nikki Cox.

She was the only good thing about the show, but other than that, everything sucked.

Russo had plans to do much less wrestling both in WCW and WWE. One time in 1998, in the column he wrote for WWE's magazine under the name "The Informer," he said, "I can't imagine an episode of Raw with no matches. Then, again, maybe I can." Wait - Russo was the Informer as well as Vic Venom?? This is the first i'm hearing of this and it's blown my mind. I used to love the Informer page.

Dusty Rhodes put this jobber in a wristlock for the entire match! Though I do like watching the promos from that time period.

I have to believe Russo was sent to kill WCW. I can’t believe some of those ideas he came up with were genuine.
For example, if you hired me to kill WWE... I’d probably do the same things
-. “Acknowledge there’s a script” in promos
- Put the world title on a celebrity and if that didn’t work... put it on myself
- Constant trash matches like “On a Pole”... even the actual stupid items are running out and you try to think to yourself “I know! I’ll put one of the wrestlers’ mother on the pole! That will be really shit!”
- Fingerpoke of doom. I mean, come on... they did the whole “Don’t even change over to the other show cause I’m hearing Mick Foley won the World title, that’ll put butts in the seats” thing on the EXACT same night they pull THIS shit. It’s basically telling everyone “See that show? That’s much better. And if you don’t believe me, watch this...” and then they actually have Nash sacrifice the title to Hogan. Which they had to know didn’t make sense. ______________________________________________________
Okay so I don’t know if Russo was behind ALL of those decisions but I refuse to believe McMahon hadn’t got moles calling the shots in WCW. There’s no way you’d do those things unless you wanted to kill it... then again, TNA came bloody f***ing close because their decisions are the reason they’re not on Cable TV anymore. They’re the reason they’re wrestling in gyms all of a sudden. It’s a shame to see what happened to that company aswell but that’s for another thread. Perhaps Vince tried the same thing and it worked... but it’s less obvious than it was with WCW so maybe not.
I will say this... a show WITHOUT wrestling matches or even just one or two could definitely work. I agree with Russo on a lot of things and a part of me still wishes he was working with WWE because I know they’ll filter out the bullshit and use some of his more greater ideas. Like it or not, he’s a big part of why the Attitude Era was so good. He does “get it” to an extent... I just can’t believe he’d ever think some of those decisions in WCW were good when he’s came up with stuff like Austin, DX, Rock, etc.

Russo ultimately sees down at wrestling and considers it fake, in the wwe he had an editor reigning him in from his worsrt impulses but left alone, you can see his disdain for wrestling add to that the legend that he wasn’t really interested in wrestling and just wanted a sitcom and that tells you a lot about his wcw run.
