I had high expectations because I think Dustin is an all-time great who seems to have only gotten better over time, and the style of this match played to Cody's strengths as a storyteller, and they still managed to exceed those. Excellent match. It alone was worth the price of admission IMO.

Q: Why should WWE be worried about AEW?
A: Because AEW saw a 50 year old man, booked as a comedy wrestler for a quarter of century, turn in a MATCH OF THE YEAR candidate when given the chance.
Imagine what guys like Roman Reigns or, dare I say it, John Cena could do, free of WWE's constraints.

Honestly, if AEW are looking to have a 50 year old guy as one of their mainstays, I'd argue that Dustin is a better choice that Jericho. He looked so freaking good, both in terms of his wrestling and in terms of his look and aura. If they made him champion at some point, I would not be against it at all.
Cody is really good. I mean, he has such a good handle of wrestling psychology and can put on matches that are far more than the sum of their parts. But I would have argued for either Dustin to sneak a win here, or for Cody to do the blade job (not that I like them anyway), just to put each guy on a more equal footing.

I don’t know, I liked Dustin bleeding and just falling short: he’s the tragic hero, he’s poured his soul into the performance, but the “old horse”, as Cody was describing him in the hype vid, just couldn’t get all the way there. But instead of “put him down”, it drove Cody, the younger brother driven to bury the past, to realize that the past perhaps had to lose, but still had a ton to offer. Cody being that much younger makes me ok with the story being that he’s in his prime while Dustin is hanging on and trying new things, and Dustin came out of it no longer the tragic hero, but a conquering one, even in loss.

Cody is not an Omega or Okada type wrestler. He's not a flashy guy. He's conservative in his approach to pro wrestling, but he's incredible at storytelling. When he has a story to tell, I don't think there's many going today that can top his ability to tell it. This match was easily the best of the night for me. Dustin and Cody went all out to tell this story of brother vs. brother, generation vs. generation. Every move felt like it had a purpose, JR was in prime form on commentary, and the post match angle capped it off perfectly. A tremendous match.

I`m sure he has already plenty of freedom as their top guy. Plus he was born and raised on the WWE machine, he probably doesnt know how to do much more. And a lack of good stamina. Cena yeh,It would be a treat to see him outside of WWE.

When Cody rubbed the blood on his chest he was so hateable. He sold the moments very well. He wrestled the match as heel and promoed as a face afterwards and somehow it worked.

What a match. Probably match of the year for me so far just incredible. Brilliantly booked.
Goldust with a match of the year candidate in 2019? Yep hard to believe.

Loved the match but they were really should have done it the safe way with the blood and had Cody elbow Dustin repeatedly in the skull until he bled.

Fantastic match, even if the blood levels got so high I was getting really worried for Dustin. This is why I rate Cody. Give me a good story over meaningless spots anyday (Of course if you can combine both, you're something extraordinary).
And yeah the post match promo had me tearing up, which is VERY rare for me in wrestling. Tremendous.

Even though Dustin's blood loss was worrisome, that match had some great storytelling, and Cody's post-match promo was good, too.

Awesome match all around. I was full-on kayfabe/mark mode by screaming “can someone please stop the damn match?!” In reaction to Dustin’s blood loss. I was legit worried about the guy. I hope he’s okay.
With this match I hope AEW is on the right path to becoming a successful promotion and even giving WWE a run for its money.
