So now that we're a bit removed from Double Or Nothing, it would be a good time to speculate and look at the storylines that are coming out of DoN and building up to the first AEW show on TNT in October.
-KENNY OMEGA VS. JON MOXLEY
This is the showdown that has been on everyone's minds since DoN went off the air. When Moxley came down after Chris Jericho's victory over Omega in the main event, Mox's attention was laser focused not on one man, but anyone who tried to get in his way when he hit the ring. And while he not targeting Omega specifically, Omega made sure to not become a simple victim to the Dirty Deeds, brawling with Moxley up the ramp to the set, where Mox got the upper hand, delivering the Dirty Deeds to the stack of poker chips on the set, and eventually tossing him onto the staging below with a thunderous AA style move. It's almost certain that The Cleaner will be looking to get a measure of revenge on Mox, no matter how much Mox may believe it was nothing personal.
-CHRIS JERICHO VS. ADAM PAGE
With The Hangman winning the Casino Battle Royale, and The Alpha winning his matchup to secure a spot in the AEW World Championship match, this is going to be the main focus for the company leading into their debut show. Jericho made it abundantly clear in his comments after defeating Omega that he is taking all of the credit for AEW's success, and he believes himself to be destined to be the company's first world champion. And while he has a legit claim to the title now, he also has to go through a very motivated Page in order to do it. Page has a lot to prove on his Champions' Road, that he can close the deal and stun the world by becoming the first AEW World Champ, but having a still recovering knee and the spectre of his runins with PAC could prove to be too much of an obstacle to overcome against the resurgent, cunning, and more vicious than ever Jericho. We could easily see the title match either happening at All Out or on the first AEW weekly show.
THE YOUNG BUCKS VS. THE LUCHA BROS.
Even though the Bucks got a decisive win over the Lucha Bros. at DoN, you know that this is a feud that is far from over. If anything, Penta and Rey Fenix will be stinging from losing their AAA Tag titles both in their home country, and to the Bucks in America on perhaps the biggest stage yet. This won't sit well with the brothers, and we could see them finally regain their titles with Triplemania happening before AEW bows on TNT. But it will be an uphill battle against the Jacksons, one that could lead into the debut of AEW's own tag titles.
CODY AND DUSTIN RHODES
As Cody Rhodes got the three count on his brother Dustin in what may have been the best match on the DoN card (and definitely a MOTY candidate), it appeared that the elder Rhodes and prodigal son was ready to officially close the chapter on his in-ring career. But in a shocking and heartwrenching moment, Cody instead asked his brother to team up with him, one last time, to face the Young Bucks at Fight For The Fallen. With both men clad in crimson, the two men shared an emotional embrace "in front of God and the Entire World" to seal the deal. But one has to wonder if Cody will be able to put aside his devious ways and his obsession with destroying the last remnants of the Attitude Era to work with his brother towards scoring the win. And there's always the possibility that Cody is underestimating the master mindgamer that is Dustin Rhodes. After an amazing, gutsy showing from the man FKA Goldust, there may be more gas in the tank for Dustin and perhaps revenge for the beating he took against his own brother.
DR. BRITT BAKER VS. KYLIE RAE VS. NYLA ROSE VS. AWESOME KONG, AND POSSIBLY BRANDI RHODES
One of the biggest surprises of the night was Brandi Rhodes revealing that she had an ace in the hole in the triple threat women's match that she had personally put together when, to the shock of both the audience and the competitors in the ring, she revealed Awesome Kong, who was promptly added to the match by Rhodes. Despite the destructive presence of Kong, Dr. Britt was still able to overcome and pinned Kylie for the win. But despite this win, it still seems like nothing was really settled between the three, so it's likely we'll see these ladies go at it again. Depending on whether Kong was a one off, or whether she'll sign a full time deal, we could see her still in the mix. Certainly a Nyla Rose/Awesome Kong collision could be in the offing, and we still have boiling tensions between Nyla and Kylie (even if Kylie might not yet realize it yet). And this doesn't even take into account Allie being signed, and the numerous other women, like Sadie Gibbs, Bea Priestly, and the joshi wrestlers. There's also the idea that Brandi may have put herself in the sights of these women with her actions.
BEST FRIENDS/ANGELICO AND JACK EVANS/THE SUPER SMASH BROS.
Depsite being woefully undersold by the commentary team and the crowd, another big surprise of DoN was seeing the SSB, made up of Evil Uno, Stu Dos, and their minions the Heartless. The SSB, who have been all but absent from the American scene for years, reemerged at the end of the Best Friends/Evans and Angelico match, using their numbers to overwhelm and demolish both of the exhausted teams. The well-coordinated and vicious attack ended with the Big Dog and the Wildcat hitting Fatality on Trent, before disappearing into the darkness of the arena on a throne of their own men. The Canadian mainstays definitely sent a statement to the AEW tag teams. The formerly colorful tag team was dead, reborn as a maniacal, effective unit of destruction. Surely both teams will be looking for measures of revenge as October approaches.
MJF VS. PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE
Everybody hates MJF. Everyone wants to wipe his smug, arrogant jerk smirk off his face. And they'll likely get their chances as MJF tries to weasel his way up the ladder to the AEW belt. Maxwell Jacob Friedman saw fit to try to get in the face of Hangman Adam Page during the AEW title presentation, making claims that, despite coming up short in the Casino Battle Royale, he was destined to be the face of AEW. This brought out both Jungle Boy and Jimmy Havok, who MJF had eliminated in the CBR. Both men shut up MJF, throwing shots at him, and fighting him through the audience. But this will only dissuade MJF for so long, and it's likely he will be colliding with both men, as well as anyone else in his way. That may include his good friend Cody Rhodes. Considering how much MJF loves to lead with his mouth, it makes one wonder how long it'll be before he has something to say to The American Nightmare.
Feel free to discuss any ones I missed!
