He wouldn't be able to get away with the dick gimmick in AEW either, at least once the TV show starts. There's no way in hell TNT - which is still going to have SOME say in the content level that they'll air in that timeslot for the advertisers they're courting - will let that fly. The good part would be the nba on tnt crew roasting AEW for the dick gimmick bullshit. Charles Barkley: Hey Ernie what the hell is that? Shaq: Talk about blue balls. There’s a guy dressed as a penis!

Joey's always been about making that money.
Like others said, I wonder if this doesn't have anything to do with LU's contracts making him gun shy. I could easily see him eyeing a NXT coach spot too.
Either way, given how tight he is with the AEW crew, I have to imagine if he ends up wanting a job he'll always have one waiting for him with them if he just wants to stretch his legs or see if he can transition into a trainer job first.

AEW doesn’t need him. Even if he didn’t bring his silly act to AEW parents could google him and it would be right there which could potentially turn off new viewers. TNT has a lot of reach and could make AEW mainstream. They’re spending a lot of money to possibly make that happen. Ryan’s history isn’t appropriate for it. WWE has dozens of employees with nude pictures floating around, a few others with sex tapes, racists, felons, adulterers, and a slew of other undesirables on their roster. ANY of their content from about 97-02 would send the avaerage 2019 person scrambling for a safe space. Oh, and the guy who owns the place has been implicated in scandals ranging from steroid trafficking to sexual assault. They put on a PG televison show aimed at children. Joey Ryan is a married man with zero scandals. Sure wouldn't want parents seeing Joey Ryan fake suplex someone with his genitalia... Also, has it occured to anyone that maybe AEW isn't looking to appeal to that demographic? These guys made their careers and changed the business based on appealing to the 18-35 demo. They say they want to be an alternative to WWE, which appeals to kids. Seems to me like the alternative is not being afraid to be a little risque. Sure, maybe he shouldn't be dick flipping people on weekly TV, but using his pre-dick-flip sleaze with an occassional dick flip on PPV...why not? Joey Ryan is an exceptionally talented wrestler who got his biggest break due to a completely out of left field viral video, but he had accomplished plenty before then (wrestling around the world, founding PWG and BAR wrestling, and having a run in TNA when it still kinda meant something all immediately jump to mind). He ran with it and continued to be successful, but that's just good business sense. He's a whole lot more than that. I have a suspicion that the same people who think "Joey Ryan = Nothing but dick stuff" are the same ones who go "KENNY OMEGA IS TEH SUK! HE RASSLES 9 YEAR OLD GIRLZ!!!11!", completely ignoring that the man has gone on to produce some of the finest wrestling matches the world has ever seen.

No one is taking that away from him. However he is boring. He needed his dick flipping gimmick to get any kind of attention for once in his career. If he didn’t he wouldn’t have kept doing it. Social media and the internet in general bring awareness to things much faster these days. The scandals of years ago couldn’t be gotten away with today but I’m only mentioning this because you brought that up. I know when I hear about a new promotion and there are people I’m not aware of I google their name. I hit videos and I look at the matches that come up. Try typing in Joey Ryan and see what comes up. You’ll see “...wins lightsaber duel with his penis”, “Dick flip compilation”, “Joey Ryan’s penis flips five wrestlers including Rock Star Spud”, “Joey Ryan uses his penis to flip Mick Foley”, “Joey Ryan asks Jerry Lawler to touch...”, etc. I remember kids telling teachers to suck it when DX was popular. Do you want your son or your daughter coming home and telling you another boy asked them to touch it or tried to make them because he saw it done on a wrestling show? Kids are very imitative. I don’t think it’s a good idea or worth the risk. Keep in mind this is not the money of the fans of Joey Ryan that’s being invested in AEW. They will have a network and sponsors to answer to. No other promotion has attempted to put wrestling on such a grand scale or invested so much money since WCW. I certainly wouldn’t want to upset the people working with me on this billion dollar project just to have a guy that wants people to play with his dick on the show. Even if they didn’t let him that’s what he’s known for and it’s extremely easy to find. He’s not worth any kind of potential trouble. AEW is not going on TNT to find a niche audience. They want mainstream appeal. They want to compete with the WWE. The money they’ve spent on contracts is enough proof of that. Look how many people want out of the WWE to go there. That Kenny Omega rant is a nice piece of whataboutism but it has nothing to do with what I posted. I think he’s quite talented and I’m curious to see if he can attain some mainstream appeal once TNT starts running their show. I think he’ll need to for their main event scene to get over.

I see the comments about him being more than "the dick guy" but that's literally all I see when people post about him, shit. I don't even know what his gimmick is. What's his gimmick? His gimmick is sleazy old guy. It aint hard to find his pre-dickflip matches online. Just takes a few seconds to search. Don't you think it's bad that most of us comment on his dick stuff rather than his other stuff?

Your mind is obviously already made up on Joey, and that's your opinion and that's fine. However, I think you're skirting the real issue here, and created a new one: 1. If kids are gonna know who Joey Ryan is and what he does, TV is going to have very little to do with that. Kids aren't watching as much TV as they used to, largely because they spend their time on the internet...which is where viral videos are, including Joey Ryan's. They are far more likely to be exposed to his antics on the device they already have in their hands. 2. Not everything is about the god damn children. Adults pay the bills and provide the food, we deserve some things for ourselves as well. If parents don't want their kids watching it, then it's on them to make sure they don't. If adults don't want to watch it, then they shouldn't. I'm sick to f***ing death of everything having to be so homogenized because of the f***ing children. It is not a wrestling company's or any other form of entertainment's job to police themselves in case a child might see. I know it's not popular these days, but folks need to take some responsibility. Don't want your kids seeing something? Then YOU keep it from them and stop making the rest of the world be your boring babysitter because you're lazy. Shit has gotten so ridiculously out of balance because of this constant "I don't like it so no one should have it" mindset. EDIT: This is not meant as a personal attack. I get very animated when talking about these kinds of things because it feels like by liberating our culture, we have stifled creativity and diversity. It's this weird area where, by trying to diversify, we've managed to kill actual free thought.

If Joey Ryan goes to WWE, he’ll debut as Robert Roode’s brother, Joey Roode. He will still do the baby oil, and lollipop spots, but the dick flip will get retired. Robert will be the sensible one with his mind on taking care of business. Joey will be the wacky fun loving one. They will be the Bob And Crash Holly of this generation. I can’t wait to see Joey in the ball crawl trying to retain his 24/7 championship.

I think Kenny Omega is quite possibly the most incredible in-ring performer in the history of the industry. Moreso than Okada, Michaels, Steamboat, Flair, Eddie, Savage, anybody you care to name. He combines athleticism & variety & versatility with genuinely unique and innovative spots & moments that subvert what you've come to expect from wrestling storytelling in ways that play on kayfabe, botching, match structure, he's a great storyteller, seller and a rare example of a top level workhorse with top level psychology. He's a one of a kind talent whose run from the 2016 G1 to Dominion 2018 is probably the single greatest in-ring stretch by any wrestler. The 9 year old girl match was a 1 off comedy match that does not define his career nor is it what got him his greatest popularity. Joey Ryan, for all of his older work in PWG or his LU run, is the dick guy. He's made it his brand 200%. It's what makes him money, what gets him pops, what people want, expect, and demand from him. It defines him and it will be his legacy and he offers nothing to AEW because of it. Bring him in as sleazy actual-wrestler Joey Ryan, when he's older and beat up, and fans who know him won't care because they want the dick shtick, so he's handicapped. Bring him in as dick guy, anybody who isn't into that (played out) routine will tune out. He's pushed himself into a niche and even if he DID want to step back out of it, which I doubt, he's not really offering anything that they can't find elsewhere in a younger guy. Joey Ryan in the 00s was a solid, charismatic heel wrestler. Joey Ryan in 2019 is the Dick Guy, it DOES define his career, it IS what got him his greatest popularity, and I don't see him ever shaking, or choosing to shake, that perception. Any attempt to compare or lump in those narratives is so off-base to me.

It's this weird area where, by trying to diversify, we've managed to kill actual free thought. I appreciate the clarification that your post wasn’t a personal attack but I never took it as one. I don’t get angry over internet posts. I’m not knocking anyone that does but that’s just not me. I’m not trying to offend you or anyone else here either. In in a roundabout way we agree with each other. I say parents could be turned off by Ryan. You think parents should pay attention to what their kids are watching. That parents should handle what they do and don’t watch. Agreed. I understand your passion. It may be a little misplaced considering this is the era of the me too movement and trying to get someone to touch your penis on television isn’t exactly the type of entertainment that’s going to get a lot of support in the mainstream. It’s dancing around sexual harassment. We know wrestling is a work but that’s not going to be the kind of entertainment that’s going to attract big ratings. I imagine Tony Khan over in the Jacksonville office has some great connections to get himself some well paying sponsors for AEW. To risk those relationships, ratings and any money at all over the guy that wants you to touch his penis is absurd. Call that censorship if you want. I call it smart business. Ryan can go to CZW, wrap his junk in barbed wire and bash people in the head for all I care. That audience would probably go for it. It’s not exactly for kids or a mainstream television audience. AEW is a whole different breed of cat. It’s just not for Ryan. He sacrificed his mainstream appeal for cheap pops and dick spots. He said he bought a house with that money so good for him. He’s hit his glass ceiling here. Maybe he can get a job as a trainer at the WWE but you won’t be seeing Cena feeling Ryan up or selling penis bumps. I can guarantee you that.

I don't see why he would even want to be tied down to a deal anyway unless the money was just ridiclous.
He's making good money now with the "dong style" stuff (much more than he made at probably any other point in his career, tbh), he doesn't have to take a lot of bumps, and he dictates his own schedule. You kinda have to throw in a LOT to get somebody to walk away from that, especially when they are closer to the end of their career than the start.

His gimmick is sleazy old guy. It aint hard to find his pre-dickflip matches online. Just takes a few seconds to search. Don't you think it's bad that most of us comment on his dick stuff rather than his other stuff? I chalk that up to that most people hadn't seen/heard of Ryan before the dickflip stuff. I get that lots of the younger fans,I am mid 40s,have only ever really seen WWE. And might have just gotten into non-WWE wrestling in the past 5 to 8 years.

I don't think that's too bad, given the factors or how he's not working regularly for any major promotions, which means most fans are only going to see him in the context of clips that go viral, and aside from the one hit he got with the time he lost the DDT Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship to Vince McMahon's star on the walk of fame, those clips have been dick related because he's leaned into it. Wrestling is kind of full of people willing to play one trick pony if they think the gimmick will bring them success, I'd compare it to Foley talking about how he would make more money doing hardcore matches than he would do using his actual wrestling skills.

Not when we're talking about the context of "What will the Joey Ryan of today do next?" as opposed to "What's his past influence on the business?". I sort of wonder if maybe he might go back to MLW, if he doesn't want that NXT coaching position.
