JR being great when he cares to be is meaningless if he phones it in most of the time, which was a problem then as it is now. One good night does not erase all the nights where he didn't try, and blamed others for his lack of caring to boot. It's the same problem as Randy Orton. Yeah, they CAN be great when they're motivated but that doesn't mean anything if 90% of the time they don't give a shit.

Still a shit JR is better than Cole unless it was 2007 with JBL or the early Smackdown days with Tazz. Cole ain't real enough.

He had a lot left in the tank because he was just letting it coast the last however many years he was doing New Japan commentary.

Really?
JR's gotten really really bad.
He's not the technical oriented person he was.
He's not "good ol' JR" that can get you invested in emotional stories.
He's just an old, southern dude that's stuck in the past that used to be a really good announcer but is now coasting off his rep like so many others.

I'd give anything to have a Monsoon/Ventura team for eternity, but I'll say I think Jim Ross is the greatest announcer ever. He still had to be a shill for the product, get the catch phrases and t shirt slogans out there, but it was INFINITLY more bearable than listening to Cole shoehorn that crap in

Gorilla Monsoon with either Ventura or Heenan working color represents the very best in pro wrestling PBP. Jim Ross has been very, very good, but between having crap partners at the announce table and a lack of motivation under Vince's abusive treatment, he's never been that tippy-top commentator to sell an event or a match or a character. He always brought emotion into his work, but he really needed a lot of drama going on in front of him to sell it. Talking up a wrestler during a rest hold (or indeed, talking up the rest hold itself) was never quite Ross's strong suit.
Nonetheless, to see JR back in the saddle with his head held high in AEW is a good sight.

JR in his prime was great of course, but I can't stress enough how horrible he and Lita both were calling the first Mae Young Classic. They both sounded so bored. For all the shit Cole gets, he was way better last year without Vince in his ear.
