i honestly didn't think England would reach their required total with about 5 overs to go ..... it looked too many runs to get! but that's 50overs matches innit what a day

Amazing match. Finally won it. I still remember the disappointment of 1992.

The World Champions just sent out a chilling message to the Aussies ahead of the First Ashes Test. I bet watching us get skittled by Ireland for 85 has got Australia shaking with fear ahead of the Ashes.

That said, England win the match anyway after a solid second innings score, then bowling out Ireland for 38 in their second innings, a lowest innings score record for a Test match at Lords.
In the meantime, Australia have named their squad for the Ashes series:
Batsmen: Warner, Harris, Bancroft, Khawaja, Smith, Head, Paine (wk), Wade (wk) All-Rounders: M. Marsh, Labuschagne Bowlers: Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood, Lyon, Pattinson, Siddle, Neser

Burns & Patterson super unlucky to miss the squad. Also Carey, Wade's form with the bat demanded his selection however. The pace bowling sextet is scary good Pattinson is somewhat the forgotten man in Aussie cricket due to his injuries but at his best lightning quick.

What was I worried about? I know Broad and Woakes will get all the praise for winning the game, but without Leach's unexpected 92 as nightwatchman I think the result could have been a lot different. With the quality of England and Australia pace attacks, along with the pitches we've had this summer, I think we're going to see some exciting cricket over the next month.

England with a strong start, with Australia losing three wickets for 83 runs at the lunch break.

England well on top at tea, with Australia at 8/154. Only Smith in his return test match after the sandpaper ball-tampering scandal in South Africa is providing resistance with the bat.

Smith has tried his hardest to haul Australia's ass out of a deep hole today, scoring his 24th test century and taking the team score from embarrassing to modest. Only one wicket left for England as we get close to the end of today's play.

Australia all out for 284, Smith the last to go for 144.
England now have a quick 10 minute bat to close out the first day of the match.

At the end of the second day, England have this match in control at 4/267. Rory Burns scored his first Test century, and is unbeaten at the moment on 125.

Australia about to begin the fourth day on 3/124, having dismissed England yesterday for 374 (Burns top scored with 133). It's England's game to lose, I think, but as long as Smith is still at the crease and they can increase England's second innings target, Australia have got a chance.

Naturally, Smith gets another hundred and so does Wade. With healthy contributions in the lower order, Australia declare at 7/487, meaning that England have a day and a bit to score 398 and win the match.

This game has turned right around in the last couple of days. England are 4/85 at lunch, and it seems like their objective has gone from trying to win to trying not to lose.
