That Moxley podcast is the gift that keeps on giving.
So I've been looking up old Ambrose clips and I'm watching some of the Jericho feud and this popped up on my feed.
Now let's try to unpack this lol...
Ambrose starts off by saying people questioning his stability and his character which goes in line with how he hated his character in real life. Dude even said he didn't agree with it. Ambrose brings down the Asylum and this 3D era Mortal Kombat music starts playing lmao. The ring crew all ready to lock this thing in place not looking scared of the structure. They look bored as Ambrose is trying to scare Jericho. Dudes even give a thumbs up indicating they're good to go. Ambrose selling the Asylum like he's a Price is Right host lmao. Jericho almost cracking up at times before realizing he's supposed to be cool with this. Ambrose doing his BEST to go from the zany wacky Ambrose to the serious one he's always wanted to be.
Now to the match itself. It ended up being 26 minutes long. The reason? They had to cut a segment of the show and gave Ambrose and Jericho 10 extra minutes to fill according to reports. So, the match was hurt by that. Sure, Jericho got put through thumbtacks, sure there was some cool stuff but it was too long. The match had too many dumb objects that they both tried to grab.
Overall it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeddddddddddddddd.
Just bringing this back around due to everything going on.

My worry about Moxley being so broad about the comedy character work he hated (not just the last heel run), is that it’s going to sour the stuff that was actually funny, like him in the Mountie outfit.

I think he was ok with The Mountie stuff since he's a wrestling head and the fact he and Bryan almost cracked up at it. That's a lot different than the stuff with him being poor. Like that time that he gave Jericho that Christmas tree light-up jacket that was supposed to be funny but in retrospect based off what Moxley said on the podcast, stuff like that's basically them saying "ok, you're hobo enough to give someone this trashy looking jacket" especially after Ambrose said he blew his money during the promo that he gave him it. Looking back at these old promos, A LOT of his character had those little lines thrown in there that make him appear to be lesser. I just never noticed how many there was.

It speaks for itself when the most over thing in this feud was a freaking plant.

From what I remember I just felt it was bad because the match was too long. Like you could tell they were stretching it up for know reason other than time.

He gave cool one liners and then destroyed someone.I dont want Moxley to complete drop his comedic talent.

the biggest issue with this match was they added about an extra 5 minutes to it...
the opening was good and the climax was great... but there was just a lull in the middle where they were obviously killign time.

In defense of the comedy stuff, the fans did like it. I can understand why he got sick of it and actually wanted to put together serious stories that people could enjoy, though. I was actually really surprised to find out he hated doing it because of how good he was at it.

I wasn't actually watching WWE at the time due to personal reasons, but wasn't this the start of the List gimmick for Jericho? We go that amazing run out of this at least.
But yeah...I'm so glad Mox hated this kind of hokey shit as much as I did (but I'm not glad that it also caused him to become depressed and hate his job). I've been saying since this whole thing started, with the Nickelodeon green slime crap, that I don't understand why he's being taken in this weird comedy direction...when he was obviously more a serious, badass type as a babyface and the fans saw him that way...look at when he returned at Money in the Bank 2014. That's not even taking into account what he was like before coming to WWE and when you do, you see that he is the complete opposite of Wacky Prop Comedy Enthusiest. How Vince McMahon saw him as such destroys my mind, considering nothing of the sort was shown to be the case during the Shield's first run. Vince turned my favourite wrestler into someone I couldn't care less about.

The comedy stuff was always there to him to the point where whenever he had a segment with another face the faces looked at him like he was R-Truth. ACTUALLY, yeah that's it. He was a white R-Truth that was pushed more. So a white R-Truth. I'm not even going to get into how Truth's gimmick is trash, yall already know. I think he was ok with The Mountie stuff since he's a wrestling head and the fact he and Bryan almost cracked up at it. That's a lot different than the stuff with him being poor. I think his comedy needs to be similar to how it was latter 2016 when he was champion on SDL. Stuff like this That works for him. It's funny but it's also "cool funny" and it shows that he's still a badass. Most of the time they had him do just silly stuff that just seemed weird. Almost every segment with another face had the faces looking like this after Ambrose said something.

I get what you mean, but I think you greatly undersell how much an utter nutbag R-Truth is. Ambrose wasn’t going into matches legit not knowing the damn rules or what belt he was fighting for.
Ambrose was eccentric. R-Truth needs help.

If Ambrose was going to have his own match, it should have been a Street fight down a back alley or something like that.

The worst part about R-Truth is that they actually had a segment where he admitted he's not really nuts, he just acts that way to get what he wants ("And THAT'S how you get into the Smackdown Live main event!"), and then dropped that after like 2 weeks and had him go back as if that never happened.

I kind of don't like the idea that now we're supposed to feel guilty if we were actually entertained by any of the hobo or comedy stuff, just because he didn't like doing it.

I still say the idea behind the match was solid, but it needed to be a multi person spectacle and not a one on one match.

Also from what I recall of it there was a backstage segment between Balor and Ambrose that while still having some of that awkward WWE writing in it worked well enough and featured Ambrose speaking for the IWC collectively at that point when he told Balor to eat a carb.

What really sucked about that match is how blatantly obvious Jericho wanted to put Ambrose over. He was doing shit and taking bumps he shouldn't at his age to make Dean look like a maniac, and the stupid gimmick detracted.
The Anti-Brock, given he had the perfect gimmick and did f*** all to help!
