Gee, can't imagine why I'd be wondering about this the day after Greatest Battle Royal or whatever it was called... Though to be fair I've been meaning to make this thread for awhile anyway.
For me I've seen...
Piper / Mr. T Hogan / Andre (seriously with this? It's not good but it's really not bad) Hogan / Warrior Patterson / Briscoe Brothers of Destruction / Kronik Edge / Triple H / Kozlov Sting / Hardy Cena / Wyatt Martinez / Rebel Wyatt / Orton

Hogan/Andre isn't a Big Daddy Meltz 5 Japan Star Classic but it is arguably the most iconic wrestling match of all-time.
Lousy dorks.

Hogan vs Andre probably wasn't the worst match of year, but I remember seeing it for the first time and being completely disappointed. However, Andre had just come off back surgery three months prior and was in his decline. Hogan could actually put on some decent matches at this time, but no one could really carry Andre at this point and Hogan was just trying to put together a match that was easy for Andre.

When I clicked on the thread and saw Hogan vs. Andre in the poll, I thought I was voting for the BEST matches that I've seen for a second. Can't believe that's on there.
I've seen
Hogan vs. Andre Hogan vs. Warrior Briscoe vs. Patterson BoD vs. KroniK THAT Jackie Gayda match Cena vs. Laurinaitis Wyatt vs. Orton

Observer really kept the hate-fire of the WWF stoked in the 80's, huh? Success is truly the unforgiveable sin.

When I was a kid growing up in the late '90s/early '00s, the way my grandfather talked about that match and Andre in general made it sound like some historical, almost mythical event. That match along with Hogan-Rock at WM 18 proves that sometimes atmosphere and electricity can carry a match.

If you think Hogan vs Andre is the worst match of the whole entire year, I’m not sure why you even watch wrestling.
Also where can I see that Albano vs Blassie Cage Match!?

I've seen all but six of them. The only one that's really catching my interest is Sting vs Tony Palmora. Who was Palmora and why is this the first time I'm hearing of him or this match?
The one I've rewatched most recently is Hogan vs Piper from Superbrawl. I rewatched this ppv a couple weeks ago and even though that match sucked I can't recommend the overall ppv enough.

The biggest flaw with this award is that it rates matches on the basis of it being a 5 star mat classic ala Flair/Steamboat. Personally, that's not what makes a good match to me. My sole question when determining match quality is, "Did it accomplish what it set out to do?" And you can bet your ass that Hogan/Andre, for example, more than accomplished what was intended. This is why I just can't take Meltzer's match ratings seriously. The guy's criteria is so narrow and so fixated on only one or two types of wrestling and storytelling.

I've seen all of them except last year's because I refuse to watch Crown Jewel, but yeah this is one hell of a list. And while I wouldn't put Hogan/Andre on there, I get why he would put it there. It was a match built on spectacle and the Observer leans toward a more match work-oriented angle. It was not a well worked match and there's a reason the main images out of that match are the staredown and the slam: those were all the match was really about, and the rest of what was there isn't good on a technical level, which is what he's judging it with. Anyone who's unable to take his opinions seriously because he gives reviews based on what he enjoys and thinks is valuable in wrestling is sort of missing the forest for the trees.

I've gone out of my way to watch a lot of these. I love bad wrestling almost as much as good wrestling.

Think people also have to consider that there were probably a lot of fans in 1987, at least those in the types of circles that were reading dirt sheets, who might not have been enamored with Vince taking over the old system with his brand of wrestling, and might have viewed Hogan/Andre as a sort of definitive statement of that.
Not saying I agree (the build to the match and the spectacle gave it enough to keep it from being a bad match, despite Andre's compromised condition), but I'm trying to put myself in the mindset of someone in that time.

The awards are the result of subscriber votes, so it is not so much Dave's opinion as it is the opinion of the type of person who would subscribe to the Wrestling Observer in 1987 (? is that the year that happened? idk), and who knows what that cross section looks like fully. I am sure it is influenced by whatever (probably negative) review of it Meltzer provided, but it isn't entirely his opinion taken into consideration.
