Considering the legacy the guy has, 3 million seems pretty low.

Considering the legacy the guy has, 3 million seems pretty low. Yeah, I had to double check to ensure that it wasn't for some personal account and not the main channel. That just does not seem right. I looked at the list of the top 50 subscribers. First, I cannot fathom why anyone, let alone 96M people would actively choose to watch PewDiePie. Second, 56M subscribed to 5-minute crafts? Really? On a side note, there was some web series that was put out by the parent company, Channel Frederator, that I used to watch every week and cannot for the life of me remember what it was now. It wasn't Simon's Cat, though I do enjoy those videos. Third, I had no idea Dude Perfect was so damned big.

Sometimes you just can`t understand people

I'm surprised he didn't hit this long ago. He was one of the first big time youtubers and is one of the few who A) is consistently entertaining and B) isn't an annoying, attention-seeking prick.

That seems insane to me because I think those guys are the best thing on youtube. It's quality content that isn't clickbait or overtly commercialized. But then again I am right in their demographic: white male who's 25 to 40 and likes movies. But back to AVGN. Good for him. I hear good things about the guy so I can't hate. He really set the standard of what youtube could be.

I wonder if it's a case where more people visit his website to watch his videos rather then subscribe to his YouTube page.

I have to agree that is surprisingly low for someone who has been around as long as James Rolfe.
Still seems like genuinely nice guy in R/L and seems pretty relaxed as a person rather than his character who is always angry.
Either way dude deserves his success, he has inspired many other reviewers... Some a little too much (Irate Gamer)

I think his numbers are like that for a couple of reasons.
1. He went a pretty good period without consistent uploads because he was making the movie. 2. I've heard a lot of people hate Mike Matei. 3. His #1 money maker is not a family friendly character.
AVGN is a niche product that is great but it's niche I think the fact that the dude is like 40 years old and can do that is great but younger kids don't really relate to what he's playing, parents will be aghast at what he says and his stream stuff he does with Mike is kinda boring as James is funny when he can edit the jokes but he's not as good off the cuff. All that stuff is going to hurt his numbers because just live streaming seems to be what gets people to watch now days.

Another reason he doesn't have as many subscribers as other channels may be because he doesn't beg people to like and subscribe his videos like everyone else does. At least I don't believe he ever has.

The number being low will be partially due to him predating the YouTube era. A lot of people of his content producer generation still have surprisingly low numbers on YouTube because of doing it first elsewhere.
