In a flight of fancy, I bought a book about pirates, Under The Black Flag. Both informative and entertaining, it unsurprisingly drew me back to playing the Assassins Creed games set during the same time.
I've made a thread before about Rogue, which has my favorite setting, the North Atlantic. Who else has played this particular AC game, and what are your thoughts on this area? I love the cold weather setting, and the very vivid skies as you sail past massive glaciers. And the atmospheric music is perfect for the vast stretches of lonely cold.
Just today, I took my ship through the arctic passage to the eastern side of the map for the first time in my playthrough. As I cleared the cliffs, a massive man of war came into sight with the snow covered northern edges of the game map in the background.
Just a great, stunning moment I felt the need to share.

I really need to play Rogue sometime, it's one of the few in the series I haven't played yet. I just bought it recently so like...yeah I'll get around to it at some point. It seems super dope.

In terms of gameplay, it was basically an expansion pack to Black Flag, which I'm fine with. AC4 was one of my favorite games in the series and I'm not going to complain about more Black Flag with some mechanical improvements here and there. The North Atlantic/River Country setting was also a good one. Iutside of downtown Manhattan, it was an interesting change of pace to go through a whole bunch of smaller towns versus mostly being set in a couple of major cities. I think after Manhattan, the next biggest cities were Albany and Halifax and those were pretty tiny compared to even Kingston, Havana, and Nassau in AC4. I also liked how they incorporated the detection ring from the multiplayer modes into single player. It made for an interesting change of pace being the target of Assassins as well as their hunter.
What really sold ACRogue for me, though, is the storyline. Shay was a damned good character with a good story arc. It was fun playing as the typical villains of the AC series while also humanizing the Templars and making their beliefs and motivations understandable. It also painted the Assassins at their worst, which shows that even the Master Assassins and Mentors are plenty capable of reckless and outright bad decisions.
Lastly I really like the bonus costumes and such. Like one of the unlockable costumes you can get is a Viking outfit. Another is a suit of Templar armor from the Crusades, though that sadly doesn't turn any heads in 1700's North America.

So here's my personal experience with Assassin's Creed - played the first game years after the fact, liked it, didn't like it enough to have any temptation at all to play any of the games after it.

I liked the small remote towns as well, especially in the North Atlantic. They were very well done, and always left me wondering what mysterious tragedy befell them. And that's pretty much how I describe Rogue to anyone, is you jam AC3 and 4 together and you get Rogue.

I play all Assassins Creed on XBone. So I’m waiting for a sale because it’s digital only (yo, fxxx digital only games)
I’ve seen it on sale countless times on PS4, but never over on XB.
